Part Two Some Reminiscences Early 1900s Name: Mr. T. Taylor. Headteacher: Mr. Leigh. “Our family attended the school in the early part of this century. I had four sisters and two brothers. Mollie, the eldest, started about 1900, Gertrude 1903 and myself 1905. The others followed later. Mr. Leigh was the Headmaster and he lived in the Schoolhouse. In addition, I seem to remember his wife was a teacher. As regards the other teachers, I can only remember Miss Nightingale and two sisters from Strines who I think were called Johnson. Looking back at the village of Marple, I don’t suppose there are many residents still living in the district from the time I am writing about. Our family lived in Stockport Road near the old police station so you will see we had a long walk for our dinners as there were no school dinners. As regards the teachers, they were excellent No trouble from the scholars and whenever a scholar left school they could read and write and do their sums.” |
