Part Two..cont

1942 - 1947

Name Norma Crawford [nee Greenwood]

Headteacher Mr. Revill

“I started at All Saints’ in 1942 - Mr. Revill was the headmaster and Miss Johnson was my first teacher. My most vivid memory of that time is of the toilets being outside the school - they were round the back along the wall that now faces the infant entrance, as far as I can remember they were just a piece of wood with a hole in it!

Miss Johnson was very kind and gentle and I was happy in her class. I can remember using coloured chalks to learn to write, and having milk to drink which I did not like because it was warm. I do not remember having any toys or playthings.

Miss Dobson was the next teacher in Class 7, I liked being in her class because on a Friday afternoon we were allowed to play with the little boxes of toys from a big cupboard and I liked to choose to play with some small coloured mosaics to make patterns.

I think Miss Brown was my next teacher in Class 6. This class was in the hall near Mr. Revill’s room! I did not like this because I did not like Mr. Revill. We did History with Miss Brown and Poetry which I liked. I went into hospital while I was in this class to have my tonsils out and Miss Brown was very kind to me.

Miss White was the teacher in Class 5, I liked her class because we did lots of reading, we read the Beacon Books, I enjoyed these books, I liked the feel of the cloth backs and also the patterns on the backs of the books. I liked reading and my friend and I tried to finish all the books in this class.

The next class - 4 was also in the hall. It was very noisy and I did not like it too much, we had a man teacher, I cannot remember his name, but I can remember doing a Topic on The Vanguard, and having to bring cuttings out of the paper to stick in our books.

Mr. Goodwin was our next teacher and we were back in a classroom. We did lots of interesting things with him and I remember a boy bringing a “Biro” to school, the first one, and no-one would believe him when he told us it did not need blotting paper.

Miss Lockwood was our next teacher in the Top Class this was Class 1. This was a good class to be in because we were Monitors and we did lots of interesting things. We had a sewing lesson and Miss Lockwood made us use a thimble and now I still wear one when I am sewing. We learnt to knit on four needles and we made a pair of socks, mine were grey with a blue stripe round the top, I wore them and was quite proud of them! We did Nature Study and we used to collect things and display them on a table, and I was in charge of keeping the table tidy. On Monday the boys mixed the ink in the cellar and brought the pots round to each classroom in a tray, the pots went back to the cellar to be washed out on Friday. There was a fireplace in this classroom but I never remember having a fire in it, there were pipes going round the room and they used to be hot and we dried our wet clothes on them. I think this was my favourite class because we were encouraged to be helpful about the school and we were out of the classroom quite a lot doing all kinds ofjobs and this made us feel more grown up.
