Welcome to "Samuel Oldknow's"
Marple Website Pub Guide.

The Marple Website's well known Pub Guide underwent a major revamp in 2008 with a new navigation system tied to the local pub signs and now uses Google Maps to help visitors to zoom in or out to find their way to each of these Marple and District establishments.

With the "retirement" of our previous tour guide, Egbert Mackereth, we also took the opportunity to rename the guide as a tribute to Marple's greatest benefactor, Samuel Oldknow

There wasn't a pub in Marple called the "Oldknow Arms" at the time but we was felt there should be! In 2016 this has been corrected and Marple has it's very own tribute to Sam in The Samuel Oldknow Bar.

Introduction
Our aim is to provide visitors to this guide with a brief synopsis of each pub. We have tried to cover all the key information that a person unfamiliar with the area might wish to know, like opening times, whether food is served, if children or pets are welcome and if there is any entertainment provided. We've also included a quick key at the head of each page covering the features we would expect to be most frequently asked about, using the following symbols.

We've used Google Maps to identify the location of each establishment and these allow you to zoom in and out and drag the maps with your mouse to work out how to find your way there. You can even switch from "map" view to "satellite" view, or a "hybrid" of both. These overlay aerial photographs with the main roads and are not just helpful to find your way but also great fun to play with!

We no longer rate the pubs or give our own verdict on each one as we feel that people have different requirements and expectations and we would encourage everyone to visit at least once to form your own opinion. However, we will include visitors' POSITIVE comments on each pub's page. If you would like your comments to be added you can send them to us by email using Only positive comments will be accepted and you must be prepared to have your real name displayed against them. Anonymous comments will not be accepted and inclusion will be at our discretion. Landlords and Landladies, feel free to encourage your regulars and visitors to send in their comments.

We would also encourage Landlords and Landladies to keep us up-to-date with any changes and to include their own comments in "What they say about themselves". This is a great opportunity for you to say something that may encourage new visitors. We will also feature up to two additional photographs with captions on each page. Email your corrections, comments or photographs to Finally, if you have your own pub web site and would like us to provide a link to it, then all you need to do is add a link to www.marple-uk.com on your own site and then let us know.
