Hi Will
glad you've discovered that census on ancestry. I was rather nervous about taking up the subscription at first (lots of people saying it wasn't very good and impossible to cancel the 2 week free trial) but I'd not be without it now!

Have you tried posting to the boards on genesreunited for look ups on the earlier census?   There are lots of really helpful people there.

Another *very* helpful site is rootschat.com  I recently posted a request for a look up on the 1841 Derbyshire census and a very helpful lady gave me some information that has enabled me to connect my tree to another researchers.

I've not got a John Bradshaw in my tree as far as I'm aware  - but I've not done loads of research into siblings of this line.

Names in my line are as follows:
Murial Joyce BRADSHAW b1922 d 1977 in Queen Street, Marple
Albert BRADSHAW b1885 in Queen Street, Marple
Joseph BRADSHAW b1854 in Brabins Brow, Marple
William BRADSHAW b c1822 in Calver, Derbyshire
Godfrey BRADSHAW - no other information known.

You'll have to drop me a line if you find we have a common ancestor.

Netty,

Thanks for the information. Since posting this I had noticed the 1861 census on ancestry.co.uk (I agree it's well worth the subscription). I had noticed that Marple Local History Society has copies of the 1851 census on sale for £1 but I have not had a reply from the email address on their web page. Do you know of any other sources for the earlier information for the Marple area?

Also I notice that you have Bradshaw's in your family tree. I also have Bradshaw's in my tree. My gr-gr-grandmother was a Hannah Bradshaw (b. 1838) also from Marple and her father was John Bradshaw (wife Sarah).

not sure if you'll pass this way again but if you do you may be interested to learn that the 1861 census is available for the UK via ancestry.com and should allow you to search Marple.  You have to pay to use it but well worth a years subscription IMHO.  Or you could look in on genesreunited.co.uk site and post a request for a look up on their discussion boards.   Ancestry dont have the 1851 census yet but I'm sure it'll be coming!

I am researching my family tree (Longstaff(e)) and have located ancestors in Marple in the early to mid 1800's. If anyone knows of any links to this surname in Marple I would be interested. Also I would like to know if census material is available for Marple for 1851/1861 and if so how to access it.

Thanks

Will
