I don't whether this is useful or not but it is my understanding there is currently a block on all new domestic planning applications in the area.

It might be worth exploring with the planning department whether planning application is likely to be granted.  From what I hear it is more likely to be refused.

They do not have planning permission, yet but it is underway. Plans are available at the library.

Listen Marple. We have sent emails to the press and to all the MP's of the region. One MP is for the LIB DEMS, who is currently complaining about the shopping centre in Offerton having planning permission to be torn down and flats created.

What about Glengarth? Has any one been up Station Road? Has anyone seen the amount of flats on that road? No longer is the the Station a prominant feature of that road, and I move that the road be renamed to Prefab Alley.

The Friends of Glengarth is trying to get as much information together so that we can try and thwart the progress of planning etc. One suggestion we have is apply for listing of the building. Another is to get as many people to write and apose the planning.

Further details will be available on the website Save Glengarth.org

MOTION CARRIED 26-6

The Annual General Meeting of North East Cheshire Mencap has just this past 10 minutes, voted on a single motion. The motion is to sell the land at 62-64 Station Road on receiving outline planning permission from Stockport for 15 luxury appartments.

A counter proposal by the Friends of Glengarth was not even allowed to be offered.

A sad day for Marple.

IT IS NOT TOO LATE!

Although the application for planning permission would have been submitted by now, North East Cheshire Mencap, have to submit the proposal to thier AGM.

There are a number of "users" of the site who intend to submit a counter proposal to try and save the site. Obviously this would involve fund raising to save the site, but it is worth while.

The history is great, but the future of the site would be better. Look at the following link for Stockport Rugby Club. They are proud of thier contribution in the sixties. We need to get more support. Tell your friends. It will get into the newspapers. We have to try.

Very sad to hear this news, Glengarth can be justly proud of the work it has done in Marple over its history. More flats eh? just what we need!!!

In the 1960's there was a huge Marple movement to buy Glengarth house, this was organised by Marple Mencap. Now nearly 50 years later and blighted by lack of support and increasing legislation it would appear that Marple is to lose another valuable piece of its community. The legislation which is a complete irony is the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 which finally came into force in 2004. The irony being that a charity set up to provide care and valuable services for people with learning and physical disabilities is being forced to sell its land owing to extreme cost to meet an act set out to serve the disabled. Although everyone who uses the site is in support of the Act and its contents, it still leaves a bitter taste in ones mouth.

In truth the lack of support from the community has played its part.

The proposal is that North East Cheshire Mencap will apply for planning permission on the land for flats and then sell the land to the highest bidder. So within twelve months we could be the proud neighbours of yet another block of flats.

There are two businesses’ that run at the site that are going to have to relocate. One, which was set up with a lottery grant, will find it difficult to relocate with in Marple. Neither business makes a substantial profit owing to their role and function as care providers.

It is a sad week here in Marple, we all know Glengarth, we all know that the work done by North East Cheshire Mencap has been and is invaluable. They will be dearly missed from the Glengarth site.

Finally. All parties concerned will be able to relocate, the sale of the land with permission, will secure Marple Mencap future as they seek to lease property to continue their valuable care services. The businesses housed at the Glengarth site are already looking for alternative sites and will continue. It’s just a shame that after so long being a centre of care in Marple that we are losing Glengarth as a centre. Has the community failed it self?
