Let's not forget that Freemasons always look after their own. A bit like a self-help society,

Bowden Guy,

Are you aware that the Masonic Charities are the largest giver to non masonic charities and second only to the National Lottery.

Freemasons are prohibited from discussing religion or politics at there gatherings, it is not a religious organisation and has members from many faith groups, including Muslim and Roman Catholic but atheist are excluded from membership.

If it is a secular organisation but allows in members with a faith, why are atheists barred?

From the pages of the UGLE:
"Membership is open to men of any race or religion who can have a belief in a Supreme Being and who are of good repute."

From reading the pages I don't see what's different about Freemasonry than any other organisation that does charitable work (e.g. Round Table etc). In fact the Freemasons limit themselves by requiring members to believe in a "Supreme Being". I suppose that's their loss as people who have no faith but want to contribute to society through some sort of organisation will choose one other than the Freemasons.

The lodge welcomes inquiries for membership from applicants over the age of 21 and who are of good character and have a genuine desire to be of service to mankind and the community in which we live.

Freemasons are prohibited from discussing religion or politics at there gatherings, it is not a religious organisation and has members from many faith groups, including Muslim and Roman Catholic but atheist are excluded from membership.

The Doric Lodge has met in Marple for over 100 years and currently has a membership of 43 and increasing.

Q,
Are Freemasons expected to prefer fellow
Masons at the expense of others in giving
jobs, promotions, contracts and the like?
A
Absolutely not. That would be a misuse of membership
and subject to Masonic discipline. On his entry into
Freemasonry each candidate states unequivocally that he
expects no material gain from his membership. At various
stages during the three ceremonies of his admission and
when he is presented with a certificate from Grand Lodge
that the admission ceremonies have been completed, he
is forcefully reminded that attempts to gain preferment
or material gain for himself or others is a misuse of
membership which will not be tolerated. The Book of
Constitutions, which every candidate receives, contains
strict rules governing abuse of membership which can
result in penalties varying from temporary suspension

Although not officially attached to the United Grand Lodge of England, there is a Masonic Membership available to Ladies.
I know very little about this organisation except that it is an honourable institution. I do understand that that 2 lodges meet
at the Stockport Masonic Guildhall.

Duke, you ask "whats in it for me"

Well, we aim to make good men-better and  a person who expected to gain pecuniary or mercenary advantage by attempting to join, would not be acceptable.

I do beleive that the links shown in this thread will give you an insight into what it's all about
