I've added some photos to the Treetops Album of a chap called Ken Chaisty who stayed there between 1949 and 1951. Ken would love to hear from anyone who was at the hospital at the same time as he was.

I'll tell you what struck a chord with me.
Page 2 on the photographs, top row and 2nd from the left is a young lad who appears to
be fixed to a "frame". It was this apparatus that I was fixed to for about 15 months.
Legs apart and fastened from ankle to chest on this board.
Amazing the things that rattle loose the memories.

It has just occurred to me that some of our visitors with an interest in the Orthopaedic Hospital possibly don't visit very often but may have a "notification" set up when something is posted in this section of the forum. The new one came via Marple Local History Society from a lady who worked there as a nurse. She was called Joan (don't know her maiden name) and is now in her 80s. She says she was there between 1947 and 1949 to do a pre-nursing course and "all of us 'nurses' were between the ages of 16 and 18 getting some experience before doing SRN training at age 18." Joan has another photo of seven nurse that we are hoping she will send through.

The square ones from the 30s I purchased from a chap in Bredbury who I had brought some local negatives from in an ebay auction. I ended up giving him extra money for the hospital ones that he hadn't put on ebay yet because I thought it was important that they were shared with as many people as possible. He felt the same so didn't charge me too much  

Most of the others came from Coral Dranfield, who I think worked there in more recent years. Coral is now the Secretary of Stockport Heritage Trust.

photos are brilliant, Mark, where did you get them from? I was in in 1954/1955. I don,t think it was Matron Parkinson unless her hair had changed colour. It could have been her but I thought her hair was fairish gold.  We had Sister Gordon who got in towering rages and we were all afraid of her. After some time a big scene blew up and she was found out. There was abig enquiry and she got the sack and was told she must never work with children again!!! I think my friend was in when Wilfred Pickles was there. She's trying to recall but she was only 6 years old at the time. I hope to remember more and find out more But interested to know where you got the photos from. Best wishes Liz

We've been provided with a great new photo in the Virtual Tour of a ceremony outside the hospital with Matron giving / receiving a cake some time around 1947-49. There is a larger version available if you click on the standard sized image.

I also remember the "verandah" where a row of beds were sited.
That seems to be on the photographs.
There was also a "do" at Manchester Town Hall, me and Charles White
were loaded into the back of his dads Ford Transit, which he used for his veg shop,
and carted on the frames to the shindig.

Go on Liz, have a root through the grey matter.

Good to hear of your experiences, Chippychap. I was in the hospital in the 50s. I was on a frame, too, with TB spine. I remember a Sister Mason. We also had films once a month on a Wednesday and fish and chips for our tea on that day as it was the cooks day off!! I really enjoyed them.

I was a patient in the orthopaedic hospital around about '64-'66.
I was admitted aged 8.
Names I remember were Nurse Mason and the lad in the next bed was Charles White from Bredbury.
I had Perthes and was immobilised on a "frame" for eighteen months as a patient of Dr Bolton.
I remember the teacher reading from a book called "Pirates from the deep green sea"
We had film shows, the one I remember was "The magic marble"
Funny what you remember when you spring clean inside your head.
