Garage sale

just wondered if anyone had ever done/been to a garage sale?  
got vast amounts of stuff to get rid of soon (as we have decided to emigrate to NZ!'<img'> but never done anything like a G sale b4 and wondered if anyone could give me advice
1 whether its worth the effort
2 how to go about it
