I was a schoolgirl at the height of the thalidomide (spelling?) debacle. The matron at the orthopeadic hospital was friendly with my grandlmother and I was given the task of visiting a little boy (possibly about 18 months-2 years old but I wasn't very au fait with babies at that time) who had hands and feet but no legs and arms. IIRC his parents had abandoned him and he had no visitors but I'm not sure exactly why he was in hospital ( I was brought up not to gossip so I didn't quiz the nurses and only heard what my grandmother thought was suitable).

I didn't know what to do so I used to sit by his bed and talk to him but there was never much reaction.

Poor little lamb - I often wonder what happened to him.

I remember you Pauline! You were a nurse when I was in the hospital as a child. I've always thought of you fondly, as you were very kind to me. My name then was Glenis Hinchliffe, but it's now Brindley. I hope you're keeping well, and life has been kind to you.

although the name does not immediately ring a bell (senior moment!! ) the good times at the C.O.H (as it used to be called in the dim & distant past) certainly do. I live in Wales now but still visit Marple to see my (younger) sister Pat. Look forward to hearing more. Joan (GLOVER)

I was a pre-nursing student at the Childrens Orthopaedic Hospital in Dale Rd. from 1960-1962. My name is Pauline Shepherd( nee Ayres) We all had a great time there, at least in off duty time! I remember Ann Heaton, Joan Glover and Jo Hammond. My friend Janet Devereux is now in America. We had plenty of local boyfriends and I frequented the cricket club.I recall Walt Brotherton and Terry Fleet( who I went out with for a while). We lived at 'Cleadon', the nurses Home on Dale Road. I would love to hear from anyone that remembers me.
