Free travel and low fares

out of the 500,000 people eligible for a free travel pass, 80,000 have still not requested one.

Who qualifies and how do I apply?
If you are 60 or over, you can travel for free on buses, trains and Metrolink trams in Greater Manchester between 9.30am and midnight Monday to Friday, and all day at weekends and bank holidays.
Before 9.30am, you still pay the current standard low fare.
You can travel for free or for the low fare on buses, local trains and Metrolink trams in Greater Manchester if you:
•   live in Greater Manchester; and
•   are 60 or over and have a GMPTE permit for people over 60, or a 'bus permit' as it is commonly known.
The bus permit proves that you are entitled to travel for free or at the low fare.
If you already have a GMPTE travel permit for people over 60, you can use this to get free travel after 9.30am.
If you do not have your permit with you when you travel, you will have to pay the full fare.
To apply for a travel permit, get an application form from a GMPTE Travelshop or your local council office. You will need to take:
•   one passport-sized photograph (25 millimetres x 30 millimetres);
•   proof of your age, for example, your pension book or birth certificate; and
•   proof of where you live, for example, your rent book or a Council Tax, gas or electricity bill.
If you are disabled, you may be entitled to free travel on buses, trains and Metrolink trams, or to travel vouchers which provide cheaper taxi travel, no matter how old you are. For more information about free travel or travel vouchers, please phone our Travel Concessions department on 0161 244 1050.
