38 images from the David Brindley /  Marple Local History Society Millennium Project have been added to the Marple 2000 galleries this morning. If you can help improve the captions then just let me know!

Doh! Thanks to Ray and Marveld I now realise that the photo of the station is from the opposite end to what I was thinking, taken from the bridge in Brabyns Park, which explains why I can't see the bridge / stairway down to the platform. They were both far too polite to post the error of my ways here :-[

Another dozen images, mostly of Marple Bridge and Town Street, have been added to the Tour this morning. http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=0

The following images have also been replaced with new copies:

http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pos=-482
http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pos=-488
http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pos=-475

There is an image annotated as Marple Railway Station and it does look very much like it but doesn't seem quite right. Where is the North Platform entrance bridge shown on other photographs? It wasn't demolished until the 1960s so why is it not visible? Could this be a very early image from before it was built? What do you think?

A mixed bag of a dozen recently acquired images have been added to the Virtual Tour this morning, including one purported to be a Marple Bridge Football Team. Don't suppose anyone's old enough to remember?

If only we could afford to buy back the ancestral home - another use for the Euromillions I think!
If I can't win it I hope you do Denise!

Images from the final canal folder from Marple Local History Society's Archives have been added to the Virtual Tour this morning. See:

http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=-32

Also replaced a 1912 Marple Wharf image already on the Tour with a very nice hand coloured version:

http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pos=-292

Next up will be images from a couple of folders about Hollins Mill.

PS - The tennis club photo captions now have the names advised by Beth Bainbridge. If you want to find these enter "tennis club" in the search facility: http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/search.php

Nice to see pictures of the old homestead!  James Jinks is my son's great, great, great, great grandfather.  If only we could afford to buy back the ancestral home - another use for the Euromillions I think!

Eleven images from the penultimate canal folder from Marple Local History Society Archives have been uploaded this evening. They include some great photos of Jink's Boatyard.

See http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=-32

Also, two images have been added that have been provided by a lady called Beth Bainbridge (nee Lane) who now lives in New Zealand. Her parents were members of Marple Tennis Club in the 30s and Beth has given me lots of names for faces in the Tennis Club photos, which I'll be adding to the captions soon.

Twenty images from Canals folder five in Marple Local History Society's archives have been added to the Tour this morning. The majority from this folder feature the Marple Aqueduct and several are from its restoration in the mid-1960s. see:

25 more images from Marple Local History Society's Canal archives have been added to the Tour this morning. Four folders done, three to go!

There are two pictures labelled Smithy Cottage on Oldknow Road, behind where Braddock's Garage used to be but they are different buildings. Can anyone with local knowledge clarify this? Are there two cottages there?

Also a better copy of St. Martin's Road Toll House:

Delighted to add a new photo of Mrs. Jean Procter MBE, Marple's Land Army Girl, to her existing album on the Virtual Tour. 91 year old Mrs. Procter MBE is pictured with her daughter at the Cheshire Woman of the Year Awards on Wednesday, when she was one of the nominees for the award and received a Lifetime Achievement Award. Well done Mrs. Procter!

A dozen photos from the Art and Craft Fair held on Saturday on Market Street have been added to a new album on the Virtual Tour this evening. Thank you to local photographer Arthur Procter for providing the images. http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=88

46 canal related images from Marple Local History Society archives have been added to the Virtual Tour this morning. These are taken from the first two of seven folders filed under "canals", so plenty more to look forward to over the next week or two.

A big thank you to Ray Noble, who has found details from the 1911 census that have allowed me to figure out a little more about the Ardern album photos. What I've been able to glean has been added to the comments on several of the photos.

A complete new album has been added to the Tour tonight. It's based on a file in Marple Local History Society's Archives on the Ardern family of Marple Bridge that illustrates how important it is to properly label your photos for future generations. Unfortunately this collection isn't well documented, so many names are missing and dates unknown. One lady who does feature often is Phyllis Ardern (nee Harrop), who lived in Hawk Green as a young girl. I think she must have lived at Compstall too later in life as there is one photo with the Northumberland Arms in the background.

If anyone out there has access to the 1911 census it would be interesting to see what can be learnt about the Ardern and Harrop families in Marple Bridge / Hawk Green.

Better copies of the following Marple Swimming Club photos have also been added:
