More photos from the 1993 Civic Society Exhibition of Listed Building have been added to the Tour this morning, along with a couple of postcards and a great shot of Ray Noble and his dad in Memorial Park.

18 photos from yesterday's Mini Christmas Festival (or "Cracker" as everyone was calling it) have been added to the Tour this evening.

A new dimension has been added to the Virtual Tour this morning with the uploading of our very first video clip. This is a short sequence shot during a carnival in the early 1960s. It has been provided by Terry Wood, whose family wedding cars can be seen in the clip. The sequence has been extracted from a family DVD orginally shot on 8mm cine film.

The file format is wmv and it should run fine on Windows Media player. You may have to give permission for the application to run in your browser the first time you try. Let me know if you have any technical issues.

Has anyone else got any interesting stuff like this out there?

Just had a correction! The photo of workers coming out of the Hollins Mill is apparently around 1890, not 1925, and the lady with a small blue arrow above her head is Lavinia Moss, Dorothy Green's Grandmother.

And now we have a dozen fantastic images provided by a lady called Dorothy Green (nee Nadin), formerly of Hawk Green but now living in Uppermill, Oldham. Her photos are mostly Hawk Green related plus a superb one of workers coming out of Hollins Mill onto Stockport Road around 1925.

A handful of new images have gone onto the Tour this evening. These include a hat shop on Derby Street from the 60s/70s (does anyone remember what it was called) and an old and recent photo of the plaque on Peeres Swindels' house in Strines. There is also a couple of shots of the inside of the "Shanty" House on Church Lane, built c1890 for Andrew MacNair. The "Shanty" is up for sale at present and you can see that the room depicted in the old photos still looks very much the same - see the "Drawing Room" on the details on the Gascoigne Halman site.

We've added 3 photos from Arthur Procter of the birthday celebrations at SVC Lighting on Market Street on 21 November, when they were joined by the Mayor and Mayoress of Stockport. Many happy returns SVC!

Several photos from a Hibbs family wedding at Compstall Wesleyan Chapel have been added to the tour this morning. Unfortunately no names or dates at the moment, although the earlier Hibbs photos added recently have now been dated as 1915 and 1923.

Also added is a large group of ladies at the Jubilee Methodist Church, Cote Green Lane, virtually all named but no date, and a photo of Mark Hudson, Fanny Hudson's great great nephew, who recently provided us with some interesting photos and paintings of his family.

There was also a nice shot of the War Memorial the day after the Remembrance Service taken by Arthur Procter that has been added a few days ago.

More support for the c1902 date is that in the background of the Church Street / Empress Avenue shot you can see both old and new All Saints' School buildings. The old building was demolished in 1902 and this must have been taken shortly before.

A few posts back I mentioned some mystery slides and a number of local scenes dating from c1911, the coronation of George V. Some of the local scenes have now been added to the tour and several photos that we already had have been replaced with better copies.

Whilst investigating these slides with Marple Local History Society we have come to the conclusion that they are more likely to date from the coronation of Edward VII in 1902. The reasons for this are two-fold. MLHS have found documentary evidence that the demolition of the store on Stockport Road (now Dolce Vita) happened in 1902 and a high resolution zoom in on the gable end of Vernons (where NatWest is today) appears to show pictures that look more like Edward VII and his consort, rather than George V and his. It is probable (but not certain) that all the slides in the box date from around the same time, so 1902 seems most likely.

Use the usual link for new additions:
