Hi all, just a quickie regarding gritting.

Rebecca (aka the boss) and I have been out this morning and gritted the junction of Bowden Lane and Norbury Drive, the pavement too so the younglings can get to school safely. The cars were going up Norbury with a bit more control after!

The bin had been filled seemingly over night so if you have one nearby it may be worth a check to see if it's been done.

I'm going out again tomorrow morning to do some more after coming off nights, but if you're driving anywhere around the area tonight or in the morning please be extra careful.

Kind regards

Steve Gribbon

Like the lady Gritter .send her round lower fold skating rink again tonight .gritter just gone by .and up Glossop road

Thankyou Steve and Rebecca. I’m sure the motorists (and pedestrians) who use the Bowden Lane/Norbury Drive junction will have appreciated your effort.

Thanks for your kind words Lily, and it was our pleasure. It was actually quite a nice day for it!

Kind regards

And I have to say, it gives food for thought on car tyres.   Everyone goes on about grit wagons, but how few people actually have car tyres suitable for snowy conditions?  I certainly don't.  And maybe we all should...

No, please don't.

Winter tyres are slightly better than normal tyres in very cold conditions, and much better in the snow. However, they are significantly worse in merely cold conditions (ie the majority of the average British winter) and normal conditions.

The problem in the (majority) of the UK is that we only get these sorts of conditions for two or three days a year. Therefore it is not a reasonable use of tax payer money to have the amount of specialist equipment on standby that would be needed to keep the roads clear, and it's just not realistic to think that the motoring public would change their tyres (or add/remove snow chains) on a daily basis. Countries that have regular prolonged periods of snow and ice handle it better, because it is for prolonged periods, which means it's practical for governments (and individuals) to invest in the equipment needed.

The best thing that most people can do is heed the warnings from the governmental bodies and only travel if you need to. A lot of the people on the roads today probably don't need to be.

I'm sure the council teams are doing everything they can.  It's easy to grumble, but there will be a lot of people working very hard tonight in bad conditions.

The council website has some information on how they prioritise things.  Lower Fold is designated as a priority route, but remember there are lots of priority routes, and bad conditions for driving in.

Certainly best to stay indoors if possible.  And I have to say, it gives food for thought on car tyres.   Everyone goes on about grit wagons, but how few people actually have car tyres suitable for snowy conditions?  I certainly don't.  And maybe we all should...

That's a great positive view Andrew.

I was onto the Council today regarding getting a particular area near a primary school gritted. The officer stated that they were doing everything they could to keep the borough safe, the gritters are in constant use.

I'm on my night shift at the moment, I've just got back from a serious incident on the M60. The snow is coming down in heavy waves rather than constantly falling. Please only travel if you really have to, of course it's easier said than done but if you can stay indoors.

Kind regards

Snow socks are a complete waste of space.   Much better with Michelin Cross Climates or similar.

Thanks Mike

I will have a look at your suggested alternatives too.

Kind regards

I think winter tyres are a great idea, I've been toying with the idea of buying 'snow socks' which are a softer and less 'industrial' version of snow chains.

Genuine question Steve (as I get gentle ribbing for putting winter tyres on my car, and on the other half’s), do the fire engines get winter tyres fitted for the season or do you make do with summer ones?

RH.

Hi Phil, thanks for your question

The tyres are meant to be for all year round but certain places/appliances have special ones for getting up rough terrain, they're not on all of them due to low maximum speed. So we don't get winter tyres fitted as such but we do have get them changed often because the minimum grip depth doesn't take long to arrive. I hope that makes sense?

Hello all who read this.

Please be aware that the gritting wagons will be in our area again from 7pm onwards. Take care if you must drive anywhere, I was working last night and even our 12 tonne fire engine was sliding about on the ice.

Kind regards and please stay safe
