Jeff & Sharon, thanks for your post - it's good to know that you support this idea and I can't think of a good reason why you shouldn't make a contribution if you'd like to.

An account is in the process of being set up at one of the local banks and should be functional in just over a week or so. We'll provide the details as soon as they're confirmed.

Great idea about the road being named after Chris too, MCC, please keep us informed how this progresses.

Thanks to those people who have made pledges so far. As Chris's parents, we're not sure if it's the "done thing" for us to make a contribution - maybe someone could advise us?

Well done MCC, that's really got the ball rolling!

We'll investigate setting up an account for this purpose next week and publish the details as soon as available.

At our meeting last night, we agreed to pledge £50.00 towards a Marple Community fund towards an award to Trooper Finney GC as a mark of appreciation from this community.

It would be helpful if details (when available) were published of :
- The address for donations
- To whom should cheques be made.

We will also be requesting that SMBC, in conjunction with a developer, agree to the naming of a public highway here in Marple as say "Chris Finney Way (or road etc.) GC" or something along those lines.

Thank you for your pledge Alan, and the idea of using a local bank is a good contribution too.

I think we should keep all aspects of this as local as possible and hopefully a local jeweller can be found who will be prepared to help.

Watch this space for more news, in the meantime here's a direct link to the Joe Goodwin Story

A great idea, might a local bank provide an account for donations to be sent?

I Pledge £10.

Reading further of Chris Finney brought to mind a story which I had the pleasure of writing about in our Community News articles. The true story was of Pvt. Joe Goodwin who won a Distinguished Conduct Medal for his actions on the Western Front in 1916. The community were so filled with pride that one of their own had brought this honour to Marple that they had a collection and presented Joe with a gold watch inscribed with the details, (read the article and see the watch by clicking on 'Community News' on the home page and then 'Feb 2000 - Joe Goodwin).
Both Mark and I feel that 'Civic pride' should not be something that is confined to the past century and that Tpr. Finney's act is an event that we should mark today.
I know that Joe Goodwin's family still cherish his watch and are rightly proud of his award, would it not be fitting if todays residents of Marple were to mark Chris Finney's bravery by contributing to a similar presentation to him?
We would like your views on the above, would you be willing to donate? If so The Marple Website would not only be willing to co-ordinate such an appeal for donations but also to put our money where our mouths are and make the first donation of £50.
Whether this actually happens depends on the response of todays Marple citizens.

Please air your views.

May I just re-iterate Marple Community Councils congratulations to Trooper Chris Finney for his award of the George Cross. He has without doubt brought honour to his home town and we should all be proud of his bravery. In a time where Marple's youth sometimes get criticised for there bad behaviour Chris is a reminder that we should not tar all with the same brush. His actions are detailed on the Community Council site at: http://www.marpleccexec.org.uk/
