The building of the shops on the Hollins Parade was started in 1960. When the builders started digging the footings out they had problems with water from the canal arm which ran into the Hollins Mill following the line of the service road at the back of the shops. If you stand on the land at the back of the Regent cinema you can still see the brick work that formed the bridge over the canal arm into the Memorial Park. The park cottage stood on this site. When it was demolished they built public toilets which were demolished in the 60's.
It was 1962 before the shops started to be built, the whole row was built at that time except Barclays Bank which was added on later. The first shop to open was the supermarket opened by John Williams who moved across from where the Dolce Vita restuarant is now. Then the Wise Way's dry cleaners then the bakers and confectioners (now Greggs)  opened, followed by the domestic appliance shop (Bramwell & Singleton Ltd) on the corner before the Barclays Bank was built. At this time all these properties were owned by the Coal Board pension scheme,

photo 1 of 14 is 1959/1960  my family bought a house on the new estate off station road. They look not quite finished in the photo.  My relatives came to marple every few weeks to watch the progress of their house being built.

This afternoon the images of Marple from the Air that were already on the Tour have been replaced with much larger versions from Marple Local History Society's Archives. Several new ones have also been added, so I've now put them all into their own album that can be access by the link below.

http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=86

By clicking on the standard sized images you will get a much larger version to browse. On several of them you can see Hollins Parade / Hanburys being built, which I think dates them to the late 50s or early 60s. Can any of you date them more accurately than this?

Thirty images from Marple Local History Society's archives have been added to the Tour today. These are from files on Brabyns Hall and Estate and have been added to the Brabyns Hall, Iron Bridge and Brabyns Brow albums. To see all the new additions use the link below:

Several new images from the 1922 Historical Pageant to dedicate Marple's War Memorial Park have been added to the Tour this morning. Most of these are newspaper cuttings, so the quality is not the best but one is particularly interesting as it shows that elusive lodge at the Stockport Road entrance to Memorial Park.

See: http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=-51

In addition, a better copy of this photo has been added: http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pos=-366

These latest additions have come from Marple Local History Society's archives. The society have made numerous contributions to the Virtual Tour over the years since it first began but I am pleased to announce that we have now agreed to work together in a more formal collaboration that will progressively make the images in their archives available to everyone to view on the Virtual Tour of Marple and District. I have the first of many folders to scan and I think us history buffs are in for some really exciting stuff!

As usual, watch this space for the latest news.

A new album has been added to the Virtual Tour this morning as a small tribute to the late Robert Salmon. Bob was a local professional artist and a member of the Society of Marple Artists for over 30 years - he even designed their logo. The album has been added as part of an update to the SMA's page on the main site in preparation for their 42nd Annual Exhibition in April, which will be properly announced soon. In the meantime, as the album is now live, I thought I'd better mention it here!

Thanks for letting me know Alison. It looks like I didn't paste the full link in, or it got lost somehow.

It should have been http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=0&page=3

Since adding those photos yesterday I have also added some shots this morning that were taken at the 2000 Marple Local History Society Millennium Exhibition but didn't have time to mention here as I was heading off for a meeting.

These can be seen at in a new album here: http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/thumbnails.php?album=84

Watch this space for a special new announcement about the Tour coming soon  8)

Several great family photos provided by Stuart Bradley have been added to the Tour this morning. These include Stuart's great grandma and great grandad pictured outside their home on Joseph Street, which is the small alleyway / entrance opposite the cinema and alongside the Reed Rains estate agents. Going to have to take a peek down there next time I pass!

As well as the new photos of the Marple Hall Tapestries mentioned in a separate post there are two new postcards of Marple Dale and a great shot of the Rag 'n' Bone man in Mellor in 1965. The latter, courtesy of Ann Hearle.

Also, Ray Noble has managed to put names to the 1955 Cricket Team: http://visitmarple.co.uk/photos/displayimage.php?pos=-3753

And we've had names added to a picture of Brownies / Guides at the Trinity Methodist Church:

Several new photos added to the Tour this morning include Maple Baths in the early 80s, Hawk Green Cricket Teams of 1940s and 1950s, and a couple of 1920s and 30s family shots of Enid Hibbs (from Compstall) and Enid Dixon (aged 95 and living in Glossop! ). Thanks are due to Axel Thomas, Ray Noble and Leslie Poole from the State of Maine, USA respectively.

18 photos of the Jolly Sailor inside, outside and the stables have been added to the Tour this afternoon. Can anyone identify the chap at the bar and possibly date those interior shots?

Uploading of the Marple Civic Society photos of Listed Buildings exhibited in 1993 was completed yesterday. Many thanks to the Civic Society for allowing us to share these great images from their archives. There are still more photos taken at the same time that did not feature in the exhibition and the best of these will be added progressively to new albums. We may need help in identifying some of them.

Happy New Year to all!

A new photo has been added to the Virtual Tour this morning with a bit of a challenge. Can anyone out there identify the mystery football player that we can't yet name?
