Mrs. F. W. Sokill's Memories of Marple

Index Back to Index

A Marple Website first - this is a sound recording of Mrs. F. W. Sokill chatting with her daughter about her memories of Marple in November 2010.

Mrs. Sokill, who is now in her 90s and lives on Station Road, moved to Marple in 1928 at the age of 12. In this recording she talks for nearly 40 minutes about her memories of Marple, including Brabyns Estate, Marple Hall, Peace Farm, the cinema and Roman Lakes. She also describes the shops along Stockport Road and on Market Street and talks about a number of local characters that Marple folk of a certain age will almost certainly remember too. To listen, just click on the Windows Media file link a little further down the page.

The recording (and video that we may get on-line later) was made by Arthur Procter and you can hear him speaking to Mrs. Sokill towards the end. Arthur was ably assisted by Mark Whittaker (I carried his bags). Considering that this is the first time we've attempted to do something like this the quality of the recording is reasonably good, providing you can excuse a bit of coughing!

We would very much like to do more of this if there are people out there who are happy to share their memories with us. Perhaps if there's enough interest then we could invest in some better equipment and software too.

If you or another family member would like to share memories with the local community through the Marple Website in a similar way to Mrs. Sokill then please do get in touch using the details at the bottom of the page.
