Marple Civic Society have been taking photographs of local buildings, street scenes and landscapes around Marple and District since the 1970s. With a particular focus on listed buildings, they have built up a huge collection of fascinating black and white and colour images. Until recently these had been only been accessible to their members but in October 2008 we are delighted to announce that the Society have agreed to share their photographic archives with us and the rest of the local community through the Marple Website's "Virtual Tour".

Since its original conception in 2001 the "Virtual Tour" has grown into one of the most successful of our heritage projects, making hundreds of historic local photographs available for anyone with an Internet connection to enjoy. With the addition of images from the Civic Society's archives the amazing growth and popularity of the "Virtual Tour" looks set to continue for several years to come.

We began scanning the first folder of black and white negatives loaned to us by the Civic Society in the summer of 2008. These images will be be uploaded progressively over the coming weeks and months and at the same time we will begin scanning of the next folder.

The photos will be added to the "Tour" in the relevant albums and categories that already exist and will fit seamlessly with the images covering the same topics that are already there. However, each of the photos provided by the Society will be tagged with the Keywords "Civic Society Archives", which will enable them to be found with a simple search. To visit the "Tour" go to www.visitmarple.co.uk.

We would like to thank the Civic Society for entrusting us with their archives and enabling us to share them with the local community.
