2022 Marple Poppy Appeal raises £23,523 for Royal British Legion!

Final update from the Marple Poppy Appeal Team

The Marple Poppy Appeal Team are once again overwhelmed with the generosity of the local people and businesses that have supported this year's Poppy Appeal. They have managed to collect £23,523.65, which is an outstanding amount, especially in these difficult economic times.

£118,406 raised since 2017 is a remarkable achievement!

Modestly, Kevin doesn't mention this year's success means the grand total raised by the reinvigorated Marple Team since 2017 has now reached an amazing £118,406 for the RBL Poppy Appeal!

Personalised framed prints showing support for the Ride of Remembrance

This year the Marple Poppy Appeal are producing a very special personalised framed print for local businesses to show their support for the Ride of Remembrance and the Poppy Appeal in general. They are asking for a donation of £50 which includes social media promotion and a free 2022 enamel poppy pin.

If you would like to place an order or would like more information please contact Kevin Murray on 07954 388782 or via poppyappeal@marple-uk.com

Here's the design and some of the first businesses to take-up this opportunity to support the appeal:

Marple Poppy Appeal 2022: the Ride of Remembrance is back!

The Marple Poppy Appeal Team has achieved remarkable success over the last five years since being reinvigorated by retired businessman Kevin Murray in 2017. Thanks to Kevin's new ideas and the generosity of the Marple Community they have raised an astounding £94,883 for the Royal British Legion in the intervening period. There seems no doubt they will take that to six figures this year!

Even in 2020, despite the restrictions imposed by the global Covid19 pandemic, the Marple Poppy Appeal Team found new ways to succeed without selling poppies by creating “Walls of Remembrance” in Marple Memorial Park, Compstall, Mellor and Mill Brow. This has quickly become a new tradition, as the Ride of Remembrance may also do too following such a successful introduction in 2021.

Ride of Remembrance 2022

We are pleased to announce that we will be doing the Ride of Remembrance again this year involving 100 motorbikes riding through the town. Each rider will carry one of the large street poppies with the name of one of the fallen men from the Marple area. The ride will be on Sunday 23rd October starting at 2pm and the route will be from St Paul’s Church in Compstall, into Marple Bridge, up Station Road to Stockport Road, turning left up to Hibbert Lane, then right up Hibbert Lane to Hawk Green, Left past The Crown, left at Ridge Road, down Church Lane to Hibbert Lane roundabout, turning right to Stockport Road and then up to Marple Memorial Park, where the poppies carried by the riders will be transferred onto the Wall of Remembrance.

The ride will be well worth watching and we would like you to show your appreciation for the riders by lining the streets where you can and applauding them as they pass by.

Who Was I? Marple Pals guided walks

This year will also see our “Who was I?” campaign, which involves the public finding out about the local men who gave the ultimate sacrifice. There are a series of cards available to help you find out more information. We are also introducing special "Marple Pals" guided walks, aided by the very knowledgeable Andy Cook, which are very interesting and informative.

There are two different walks over four Sundays, starting from Marple Memorial Park at 11am on the 2nd and 12noon for the remainder.

Walk A Sundays 2 and 16 October, Walk B Sundays 9 and 30 October. There is no charge for the walks but there will be an opportunity to show your appreciation by making a donation to the Marple Poppy Appeal if you so desire. To register interest, or for more information please email poppyappeal@marple-uk.com or contact the organiser on 07954 388782.

Sponsors needed

We are looking for local businesses to sponsor the Wall of Remembrance by making a small donation to the appeal. Sponsors will be promoted on local social media sites as well as the Marple Website and The Marple Review and will receive a quantity of the A3 poster to display in your premises.

If you would like to be a sponsor or would like more information please contact the Poppy Appeal Organisers by email poppyappeal@marple-uk.com or tel 07954 388782.
Window Posters and Enamel Pins

The A3 window posters were very popular last year and so we are re-doing them for this year’s appeal, so you can show your support by having one displayed in your window. The posters will be available from our gazebo on the Hollins on Saturday 22nd and 29th October. They will also be available in all the local primary schools, on our stand in Asda from 31st October and various shops throughout the area. (Currently Stationery Supplies, Marple Health, Marple Bridge Stores and Compstall Post Office – others may well be added – please contact the organisers if you would like your business involved).

Apart from the traditional paper poppies, we will also have a selection of enamel pins including sport favourites like Golf and Rugby as well as the Manchester Bee pin. These are in very short supply so please visit our Gazebo or stand if you would like one.

The people of Marple have always been fantastic supporters of the Poppy Appeal and we sincerely hope we can depend on your continued support yet again even in these difficult times.

Thank you
Poppy Appeal Organising Team
