We’ve got one, kindly supplied by Admin. The two local authority wards (Marple North and Marple South) are a legal definition.

This is going to sound really pedantic, but...

They are a legal definition of two electoral wards.  That's all.  When push comes to shove, all an electoral ward is is an area of land used for electoral and democratic purposes.  They don't necessarily line up with anything.  I used to live in the London of Borough of Merton, in the ward of "Lavender Fields".  There's no town or area called Lavender Fields.  It was just a name they gave the ward because otherwise it would have been called "Most of Merton Abbey, Bits of Mitcham, and a few other things".

I'd agree they are a fair basis for defining the "Marple area".  But they're not a legal definition of the town of Marple - if for no other reason than that the wards include the villages of Compstall, Mellor, Strines and High Lane. Oh and Marple Bridge if you assume that's a distinct entity from Marple.

Unless you have a legal definition of a boundary, there will be debates.

There does indeed seem to be some confusion about where Marple starts and ends. I remember hearing two people in real life arguing about whether Seventeen Windows was in Marple.

Hey, even when you have legal definitions, there are "debates".

There isn't a Greater Manchester vs Cheshire argument (unless Condate appears.....)

Somebody call?

We all know where Marple is; we just don't agree on the details!

Seventeen windows is in the parish of Norbury. The parish boundary is the stream under the traffic lights at Dan Bank, and the bridge over the stream is a 'County' bridge as it sits between two parishes.

There used to be a fantastic map on the All Saints Church website showing the boundary of the Marple Parish which is exactly what I've considered Marple to be.
The map held by All Saints Church is for the parish of All Saints and does not include the parish of St Martins, which is part of Marple.

Both Cheshire and Greater Manchester both had/have distinct boundaries which had a legal basis. Marple seems to be without an officially recognised boundary.

It's a bit like the Greater Manchester Vs Cheshire argument

It's a bit like the Greater Manchester Vs Cheshire argument which seems to creep more into the address especially online and via the post office.

Marple Bridge definitely isn't in Marple. I understand why the Marple Pub Guide includes the wider are such as Strines and Mellor though.

Whatever happened to the famous Egbert Mackereth?

A quick back-of-a-fag-packet count suggests that there are 23 proper pubs in Marple North and Marple South wards.  That's not including bars such as Bevi, or micropubs such as Beer Traders or the Samuel Oldknow.  I may have missed one or two, but I don't think so.......

But as someone else pointed out, we used to have a whole lot more........  :(

It does depend on what you define as the boundary of Marple but there are currently 22 in the Marple Directory:

https://www.marple.website/community/pubs-in-marple.html

It hasn't been updated for a while, so there is no entry for The Last Post, which makes 23.

The boundary originally used was the old Marple Urban District but if we make the two Marple Wards as the boundary, which others should be in there?

There are at least 3 or 4 in High Lane that would need to be added.

Here's a map of the Marple Wards: https://www.marple.website/marple-area-committee.html

Think you might need to also define if you mean pub or do you include bars?.

How many pubs are there in Marple?

I would say 8. A friend yesterday insisted it is 6 and another friend said 18!

Is there a definite answer, if the question is specifically about the number of pubs in Marple?

Define "Marple".
