No i'm not a teacher, but do work in a school ( it stayed open before you ask, so I didn't get a day off! )

My son is 15 and old enough to stay on his own, so I was lucky! Racheal I think they can be left at 14.

At what age do parents consider an appropriate age to leave their children to go to work.

My son is in year seven at Marple Hall, but speaking to some of the parents at primary school to pick my other son up, it appeared quite alot of these children  from Marple hall had been left at home for the day.

My friend took on a couple of her daughters friends  for the day, as they were going to be left on their own.

I am fortunate enough that I have parents close by and they looked after my son for me, other than that, he would have come to work with me or I would have taken the day off, he is a mature child and "probably" would have been fine on his own, but there is always a but!!

I know some people say, what is the difference between a child being left at home on their own, and playing out on their own??


Where does the law stand on this, at what age can you leave a child on their own??

I have to say that I have wondered about people who get stuck on roads in bad weather and can't imagine why they didn't follow the forecast and not chance the high roads.  Until now that is.  I drove off to work on Monday morning in pleasant weather but by the time I turned onto Werneth Low the hail stone started.  By the time I got to the top of Werneth Low I was in serious danger of being stuck up there.  It was hairy to say the least.  The bad weather did seem to catch us off guard that day.  That said however, I do wonder about schools that seem to close at the drop of a hat.  I had to take Tuesday off because Marple Hall was closed and I had no-one to look after my son.  A lack of grit seems to be an excuse on a par with leaves on the line in autumn.

I did not get the courtesy of a reply from Stockport Street scene, not did they grit the road. Thank goodness for the rain today, but of course I have to consider that with the great systems Stockport MBC use, they must have known the rain was coming so perhaps they did not bother. But are we not all entitled to expect the courtesy of a reply.

i went to marple hall and in all my time dont remember it shuting for the snow. i have also 3 children one of which is 22 one 15 and one 11 and this is the 1st time i have known the school to close so to say it always shut for the snow is abit judgemental dont you think.

What interests me more is why, whenever we get a bit of snow, Marple Hall School closes? Icy conditions?'>? How on Earth must those poor little darlings in Scandanavia go on, no school for half the year at least! Another thing, All Saints' Primary School was open today, does this mean under 11's are more expendable?
It appears to me that as far as Marple Hall School is concerned it's just any excuse for a skive or perhaps the Head Teacher has shares in Hollins Building Supplies Sledge Department.
When I come back in another life it's definitely a teachers job for me!!!!!

It was forecast in the national press 2 weeks ago.

I sent my email request at midnight last night, saying how dangerous my  rd was, what happened...nothing, no reply and no gritters.

The Tory's would not put up with this!

To be fair to the coumcil and the gritters, yesterday's snow was not forecast.  At 8.00 yesterday morning the forecast for North West England was 'fine, sunny, chance of the odd wintry shower.......'

Does anybody know why the Gritters turn around at the bollards on Hollins Lane and don't carry on to the top?
 Hollins lane has still not been gritted(Marple Bridge).

marple hall was closed yesterday at dinner because of the icy conditions. i rang this morning at 7.30 to be told that the school was closed for the day for the same reasons and that the gritters were expected last night didn't turn up hopefully they'll be there today and the school will re-open tomorrow (wednesday)
