If you watched the Tour of Britain on TV, it seemed to go through Marple rather rapidly.  Here is a short video I made of the Compstall Brow section
Exelent well done .

The Tour of Britain

Although there is detailed information on the Events page, the Tour only passes through Marple on one day but it can have a widespread effect.  Anyone who has gone to Yorkshire and seen the Cyclist Welcome signs will have realised how cycling has benefited the businesses in the area, and in Northumberland where there are several well marked and surfaced cycle routes for days out or longer  journeys offering the spin off of additional B&B’s etc.

We have two major assets relative to cycling.  Werneth Low that will attract “road cyclists” where cafes and pubs in Marple, Marple Bridge, Compstall and Romiley could benefit, and the Middlewood Way where the attractions close to Marple such as the canals and aqueduct, Etherow Country Park, Roman Lakes etc could benefit from more occasional or tourist cyclists.  Unfortunately Stockport MBC has been either opposed to showing what attractions there are in the Area, or simply unaware of what is available.   A simple example is the notice board near the Car Park in Brabyns Park.  It does show a route up to the Aqueduct,  but not that you can access Etherow Country Park by walking through Brabyns Park. Why not?

Over many years I have approached Stockport MBC and other organisations saying Marple needs an Information Board at the end of the Middlewood Way at Rosehill to show what attractions are in the area without getting any support. This is not the only issue, but Marple could benefit from better promotion. Perhaps now is the time to realise Marple and its surroundings are worth putting on the Map.  If you have any interest in increasing your business, or simply be proud to show off what we have in the area, then please make all those in authority realise what has to be done.
