Well that was a wet one with only the diehards coming out to play! We worked mainly on the borders alongside the pathway to the Reading Circle behind the library and it looked a bit of a mess by the time we'd finished. This is because we have placed an order for a contractor to come and resurface the circle and pathway in around a month's time. The pathway is to be widened to comply with the latest requirements for wheelchairs (it did comply when we created the Reading Circle in 2008 but recommendations have changed a little) so we moved as many plants as we could out of the way. Once the work is done we can then have a good sort out and get it back to its best.

The next scheduled Task Day is Saturday 29 June 2019 and we'd be delighted if you can come along for however long you can between 10 am and 2 pm.

Stout footwear and suitable clothing should be worn and bring your own gardening gloves and small hand tools if you have them. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.

To learn more about what we do for the park check out our fantastic promotional video created by one of our regular volunteers:

The flowerbeds are filling out nicely and the park is starting to look its very best, so it was great to get out there in the sunshine with our regular volunteers. Lots of work was done in the flowerbeds and the shrub beds, including trying out our new "Pullerbear" all the way from Canada. This is a special tool for pulling out small to medium self-seeded saplings and it works brilliantly.

You will have read elsewhere that the Treasure Hunt in Memorial was a brilliant success, raising lots of money for the park. In parallel with the Treasure Hunt, for some volunteers it was simply business as usual with a normal task day working on maintenance of the flowerbeds, gardens and fixtures and fittings in the park.

Free* trip to the Windmill Pub on New Horizons for Friends of the Park

Friends of Marple Memorial Park benefited from a win of the annual £10 New Horizons Float the Boat Draw with a free trip on the canal boat for the disabled on Sunday.

What a great day out and excellent lunch at the Windmill at Whitely Green.

Everyone should support this wonderful charity by Floating the Boat for just £10 a year:  https://www.newhorizons.org.uk/float-the-boat.html

* although the trip was a free prize we did have a whip-round and made a donation to New Horizons!

Yesterday's task day looked like being rained off but we were keen to do the last day of "Little Growers" and Marple Library staff came to our aid and kindly allowed us to set up inside. So a very big thank you to them! The first stage of Little Growers is now finished and we look forward to welcoming back the children in a few months time to plant the fruits of their success.

As there were no photos taken during our Task Day on Saturday 13 April we've included a few showing the fantastic colours in the park at the moment. Volunteers worked hard on the flowerbeds, litter picking and on the tree sculpture behind the library. Little Growers was running again too and visitors to the park popped over £11 in our collection bucket, so thank you!

Thank goodness for better weather, which allowed us to squeeze in a Task Day on Friday and Saturday this week. On Friday we repaired the fencing at the park entrance near to Lock 12 and on Saturday we launched this year's Little Growers scheme and worked hard on the flowerbeds.

It doesn't happen very often but sadly our task day of 16 March was rained off. What a contrast to February!

Isn't the park looking fantastic in the sunshine, especially with the spectacular displays from the crocuses!

A great turnout and lots of work on the flowerbeds by our volunteers yesterday. Read more about our task day here: http://www.marplememorialpark.org.uk/task-days/task-days-in-2019.html

And we're off! Our first task day of 2019 included clearing glass, picking up dog mess and removing a banister rail and a beer barrel from the park.

A good turn-out for our final task day of 2018, taking the total for the year to 24, and over 1,000 volunteer hours worked since January. Today's efforts included a tidy up of flowerbeds front and rear of the library, litter-picking, planting bulbs, clearing leaves from the car park and driveway, clearing windfall branches from the park and even clearing the access to Asda.
