How I long for the good old days when the fish and chips shops were just that: Fish Chips and Mushy peas, especially those with dining rooms

When The Batter was crisp and Golden the chips firm and hot
the peas a deep green and one portion was never enough

Eat with fresh soft bread and butter and a hot mug of tea or a large glass of Tizer.  mmmmm!
and all for half a crown (37 pence) or was it 2/6d

The chippy near the (late lamented) Jolly Sailor used to be rather good but I went a couple of weeks ago after it had changed hands and the product wasn't very nice at all. Greasy chips cooked in fat which was over-due for changing and the fish wasn't up to much either.

(I have cooked for a living)

Marple Fish Bar open again hurrah!  The one at Goyt Mill is closed on Tuesdays unfortunately so had to go on a chip shop hunt.  Luckily Marple Fish Bar is now open again at proper hours.  New owners seem nice and the chips were lovely!

The Deep Sea was open in Marple Bridge was excellent before it closed. Since then I've used the Marple Fish Bar which was OK(ish), but since the opening hours have been erratic, I've discovered the one opposite Goyt Mill and I'm glad!  It's excellent, however I must admit I've yet to better those of the Fish and Chip Restaurants around Otley & Ilkley in West Yorkshire!  (And that's from a Lancastrian!!!'<img'>.

on the subject of chip shops, which one would you recommend?

The one up towards Hawk Green, just over the humpback bridge by Goyt Mill is excellent. They do great fish.

The people who were managing Marple Fish Bar left the shop because of the abuse they were experiencing from youths. The shop is being sold to Greeks now. The sale is still waiting to go through, the owners open it up every so often to try and keep some profits coming in.

I used to like the one on derby way, but not been in since it was taken over, when I was younger , lots of fish and chip shops used to have cafes attatched to them, are there any of these about anymore, I remember my nana and grandfather used to take me to one, cant remember for the life of me which one it was, but I used to like it!!

the marple fish bar always seems to be closed, and has changed hands several times in a short space of time, if anyone know's the opening times please tell as the shutter's are always down so the opening times are not known!

I think it may be under new management/ownership with new opening hours.

I went in the other lunch time (excellent fish) but I've not seen it open at early or late  evening.

Has this shut down permanently?
