Posted on behalf of Stockport Hydro:Stockport Hydro Environmental Challenge 2016 AwardsOn a chilly but dry 18th of March many Directors and Shareholders welcomed the successful applicants for the 2nd Environmental Challenge Awards. All projects will improve children and adults awareness and enjoyment of being out doors and getting their hands dirty learning about the environment, and in some cases, sampling the rewards of their endeavours. All the projects have a sponsor, a volunteer who will follow the progress of the individual projects.
Representatives of 4 schools and a community group attended the event and were awarded with their cheques by Chairman Ben Alexander.
Cale Green Primary School's spare plot of land left after building work will be transformed in to an educational resource for children just starting school in the Early Years Unit. Delighted Teacher, Sarah Philips, receives a cheque for £175 to purchase seeds, plants and children sized gardening tools.
Robert Horton receives a cheque on behalf of The Friends of Cromwell Avenue Park in Marple. FOCAP aim to use their £250 to build raised beds to grow flowers and vegetables, creating a community garden to add to all the work they have done to establish the park as the focal point of the local community.
Teacher Gillian Moran from St Mary's CE School in Reddish, which is presently going through the process of applying to become an Eco-School, explains how the school will use the award of £175 for compost plants and seeds to teach gardening skills and encourage Children and their parents to grow their own fruit and vegetables at home.
Eleanor Duckworth and Max from Heaton School in Heaton Chapel explained how they are creating a Forest School Learning environment at school. Their £200 will purchase protective clothing, e.g. poncho's for wheelchair users, waterproof jackets and trousers to enable the children to experience the outdoors in all weathers.
Eco-Warriors and Teaching Assistant Mr Stamper and from Ludworth Primary School receive a cheque for £200 to purchase tools and safety gloves. These will be used by the children to learn woodland care and management as part of their Forest School sessions being delivered throughout the school.
