Perhaps all of you (you in particular Condate) should read Councillor Kev's book.

Chapter 1, pages 7 & 8.

Are there any proposals to take up the chance under the new rules to install signs indicating the traditional boundaries?

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/by-george-englands-traditional-counties-can-return-to-englands-roads

As I understand the guidlines, (paragraph 033 at ) http://planningguidance.planningportal.gov.uk/blog/guidance/advertisments/applications-for-express-consent-determination-appeals-modification-and-revocation/ A sign indicating the historical boundary of Cheshire could be errected at several places within Stockport.

Being practical where I have to fill in my address electronically and a county is required for completion (not always the case) on the lists I can recall Greater Manchester was not an option & the programming doesn't recognise Unitary Authorities so Cheshire it is.

And of course the northern border of Mercia is the Mersey. That's why associating Marple, (which like the rest of Cheshire is really not part of the Northwest, but part of the northern midlands as the Cheshire dialect demonstrates) with Manchester across the Mersey is not logical. While the southern border of the county, with Shropshire is indeed only 1000 or so years old, the northern border is much more ancient.

It can be of course that for purely administrative purposes, part of Cheshire and part of Lancashire are treated as part of the same administrative area (as indeed part of Lancashire was included in the old County Borough of Stockport), but that doesn't change the real borders of the counties and even if we must have the current administrative boundaries, that doesn't stop us recognising  the traditional borders for other purposes. As for the changes in 1974; at the time, an official of the Department of the Environment wrote in a letter to the Times concerning the new 'counties'. “They are administrative areas and will not alter the traditional boundaries of counties, nor it is intended that the loyalties of people living in them will change.”

For more about the traditional borders see http://abcounties.com/

The Mersey is a millennium (and a lot more) old boundary; indeed that's what the name means.  As the old saying says, "the hedge abides which field divides". Whatever purely administrative arrangements there may be, that doesn't change reality.

This discussion is bizarre!  To pursue Condate's wonky logic to even more absurd lengths, Cheshire is a comparatively recent invention, a mere thousand years old.  Marple is really part of the Ancient Kingdom of Mercia (from which the name of the Mersey is derived, of course).

Well the reality is you live in Stockport and enjoy the benefits of Greater Manchester Transport, GM Fireservice, GM Ambulance service. In fact Cheshire no longer exists as an entity in its own right.

Stockport is in the county of Greater Manchester and Marple is in Stockport. You may want it to be in Cheshire (it once was)  but the FACT is, it isn't now, any more than Manchester is in Lancashire.

Well, as far as I'm concerned it's a case of Cheshire before; Cheshire now; Cheshire forever. The Mersey is a millennium (and a lot more) old boundary; indeed that's what the name means.  As the old saying says, "the hedge abides which field divides". Whatever purely administrative arrangements there may be, that doesn't change reality.

The Co-op overpriced its products for the people of Marple and in doing do treated us with disdain. They very often didn't have stuff on the shelves either.

Quite simply, latterly, they  did not offer a good service to the people of Marple. Over the years these are some of the items that they didn't have when I was looking for them.

Mushrooms

Kiwi Fruit

Ice

Cucumber

And can you believe this one - Milk!

Stockport is in the county of Greater Manchester and Marple is in Stockport. You may want it to be in Cheshire (it once was)  but the FACT is, it isn't now, any more than Manchester is in Lancashire.
The posh people of Marple won't want to know that .youve spoiled there day .

It's a Cheshire town. What it most certainly isn't is part of Greater Manchester.

Your just denying the facts with that statement.

Of course we do but we also accept Marple is a suburb of Stockport (thankfully) and don't pretend it's a pretty Cheshire village.
