In my view the responsibility is with the MEN reporter and his editor - it's their choice how to present the news that someone has died and they have immediately gone for the most sensational angle without any regard for the people involved. As Dave points out, the landlord of the Oddies' comments are pretty innocuous and the sort of thing that anyone would say if a neighbour had died unexpectedly.
It's very possible that the reporter didn't identify him/herself as such and appeared to be just making conversation.

Can't the landlord of the oddfellows keep his mouth shut to the manchester evening news or is he crude enough to think this might increase footfall to his establishment. Pathetic.

Quote: 'John Leutton, the pub’s landlord, said: “We’re really upset. They were regulars here and they’d moved in about nine months ago. He was drinking here the night before.  A lot of people are very shocked and some of the staff are quite upset. We’d like to give our condolences to the family.”

What on earth is wrong with that?

These are quoted from the latest linked news article:

It's not right that these things are straight away reported as if a murder has happened when that may not be the case at all. Whatever happened to the use of discretion?

These are quoted from the latest linked news article:

Quote
A 52-year-old man who was at the address in the village near Stockport has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He has since been bailed.

Police later said they don't believe there are any suspicious circumstances.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding her death and the man has since been bailed pending toxicology results.

It's not right that these things are straight away reported as if a murder has happened when that may not be the case at all. Whatever happened to the use of discretion?

I notice one of the online reports has changed slightly to suggest that though sad the circumstances may not be suspicious.

Sad, undoubtably, but there seems to be some premature judgement here.
