A traditional Country Fete with activities for all the family in a fabulous hillside setting with spectacular views and a friendly, old-fashioned village atmosphere, Mellor Church Country Fete has spread its wings over the past couple of years by introducing more attractions, while hanging on to favourites such as children's races and the all-ages Tug o' War. This year, two events will be run together: the Fete in the afternoon and, from 7.00p.m., a pop-up family-friendly mini music festival, appropriately named Bands on the Hill. There is also a Well Dressing on site.
The afternoon kicks off with the Rose Queen procession through Marple Bridge at 12.00p.m.,and crowning of Rose Queen Gaby in St. Thomas Church, Mellor, at 1.00p.m.
Field events begin at 1.30p.m., with this year's highlights being the return of the fabulous duck-rounding sheepdog, a flying and static (educational and photo opportunity!) Birds of Prey exhibition and demonstration of Dog Obedience and Agility training by Ray Clayton of Chadkirk Dog Training Centre in Otterspool, at which audience participation will be encouraged. Punch and Judy has been re-worked, and the results are not to be missed; musically, the Fete is delighted to welcome Marple Hall School's renowned Swing Band to the field to lead off the afternoon, and the cool tones of jazz combo Blue Magnolia.
Top of many people's list of attractions is the Beer and Wine Tent, which is proudly presenting a glorious range of Bollington Brewery's finest ales (Long Hop, White Nancy and Festivale have been selected) alongside wines and Pimm's. For the hungry, there will be a hog roast and a burger bar on the field during the Fete, with more genteel lunches, teas and cakes on offer in the Parish Centre from 12.00p.m., timed so that a relaxed lunch can be had before the field events begin.
Stalls include crafts, jewellery, books, bric-a-brac, toys and local produce. There will be Maypole dancing, children's games and activities, bouncy castle, face-painting, traditional children's races, such as the egg and spoon and sack race, and a raffle featuring a raft of generous prizes and vouchers (plenty of meals out in Marple Bridge) from local traders.
