A local structural and civil engineering consultancy has reported that 2018 was a record year for the Compstall-based company, in which it surpassed all previous records for the volume of work which it had handled. “Last year was tremendously busy for us, and we exceeded our previous record for the number of jobs recorded over a one-year period by 10%,” says managing director Nick Ribbeck. “We have been following a strategy of carefully managed and sustained growth, and this latest landmark is proof that our strategy is working.”

Rhodes & Partners, which has a number of business award wins to its credit, offers a wide range of professional services for both small domestic and large commercial projects. “Over the past 26 years we have worked on well over 22,500 jobs,” add Nick. “In the process, we’ve developed a very wide range of specialist skills. That enables us to handle a very wide variety of different project types.

“This latest achievement reflects the fact that more and more customers are turning to us for our expertise, no matter whether it’s a domestic job, a major commercial or residential development, or a project in the retail, leisure, education or healthcare sector.

“In the past year we’ve worked on quite a number of interesting and unusual projects. These have included everything from a large, new 80-bed care home, converting a derelict Grade II listed mill into luxury apartments, and contributing to a £70 million tidal barrier scheme in Ipswich.

“At the other end of the scale, we have completed numerous residential projects and almost 200 structural engineering inspections and reports, whilst in the commercial sector we’ve carried out structural design work for industrial mixer units, glass flooring designs and children’s playframes to name but a few. We’ve even worked on a project in the sunny Caribbean, although sadly we didn’t get to visit the site!”

STRUCTURAL SOLUTION HELPS CUT COSTS FOR MAJOR REFURBISHMENT PROJECT

A comprehensive survey and design exercise by a local structural engineering practice has helped reduce costs and transform a disused mill into a luxurious new residential accommodation building. Compstall-based Rhodes & Partners undertook the work on the Grade II listed building in Derbyshire, and devised a solution which helped minimise the need for costly temporary work by utilising as much of the original structure as possible.

Rhodes & Partners’ Technical Director, Peter Graham, explains that a good proportion of the building was derelict and it appeared that a significant amount of temporary works would be needed for the restoration. “Part of the structure had suffered a high degree of deflection, but we were able to design a detailed system of cross-bracing which stabilised the building and allowed the refurbishment to proceed.
 
“We worked with the property developer and the contractor to devise a structural engineering design that would allow as much as possible of the original structure to be repaired rather than replaced. This eliminated a significant amount of the temporary works which would otherwise have been needed. There were obviously some areas where we had to make compromises, but the end result was far more cost-effective than the alternative.”

A river runs directly below the mill in a series of channels, and the potential for flooding was a major consideration. “Our design proposal included the cleaning out of the channels, some of which had failed.” adds Peter. “By re-using these channels, we were able to ensure a flow capacity that was more than adequate, even in flood conditions, so that the river could remain undisturbed beneath the building.

“A major project such as this is always challenging and complex, but we have considerable experience in working with all the various parties involved and creating successful solutions,” concludes Peter. “Where a building such as this has a Grade II listing there are obviously many restrictions that have to be observed, but we were still able to create a detailed structural engineering design that helped ensure a successful outcome.”

The completed development now offers a selection of luxury apartments.

DOUBLE AWARDS SHORTLIST RECOGNISES THE SUCCESS OF MARPLE BRIDGE STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS

A local structural and civil engineering consultancy has seen its efforts to develop its business rewarded by being shortlisted for two major regional business awards. Marple Bridge-based Rhodes & Partners originally entered just one category in the forthcoming Federation of Small Businesses 2016 Awards, but the judges were sufficiently impressed with their submission to also enter the company into a second category.

“That was quite a surprise to say the least,” explains Managing Director Nick Ribbeck. “We originally submitted our entry for the Property & Construction Business of the Year category, and we were delighted to find that we’d been shortlisted. You can imagine our surprise when we found out the judges had also shortlisted us for the Training & Development Award category as well!”

The business was established in 1992 and now offers a range of structural and civil engineering services, which cover both small domestic and large commercial projects. It was the efforts it has made to evolve over time that impressed the judges. “We have made it a key part of our day-to-day activities to look for ways in which we can improve both the services we offer to customers, and the way in which we operate,” adds Nick.

“We recognize that an established business can run the risk of not transferring experience and knowledge to its younger employees, and can also get left behind when it comes to using the latest technology. To prevent that happening to us we adopted a new approach to the way we work. We recruited some younger staff, and invested heavily in new technology and in training for our people.”

As a result, the business has seen a significant increase in both turnover and profit, and has recently gone on to work on some high-profile projects. “Whether or not we win an award in either category it’s good to know that our efforts are being recognized by other people, but naturally we’re keeping our fingers crossed for the Awards ceremony evening in November,” adds Nick.
