Good to see strong support for our Marple but then again we do have other groups that also look after our historic town.
It'll be interesting to see what happens from here onwards.

I'm sure other residents will have opinions on how the money could be spent, it'll be nice to hear the positive comments/suggestions.

£10,000 boost for Marple's shopping centre

Marple has been awarded £10,000 to help make the town centre even more attractive to shoppers.

The award has come from the scheme set up by Mary Portas, the "Queen of Shops", which is designed to breathe new life into Britain's town centres.

Marple's success in the Mary Portas Bid scheme was announced by local MP Andrew Stunell at an informal meeting of the Marple Town Team Partnership which will now decide how best the money will be spent for the good of the town.

It was the efforts of Town Team members Di Jackson and Mick McPhee, along with Mr Stunell, that helped secure the £10,000.

Said Ms Jackson, representing Marple Vision Partnership: "We are delighted to have secured this award. It's a lot of money for a small town and we are thinking creatively about how to make the most of it. Andrew Stunell’s support was vital, as only towns whose MPs were willing to sign a pledge of support were awarded the money."

At the meeting to announce the award, Mr Stunell said he was delighted and he would be following the progress of the Town Team with great interest. He also pointed out there are further awards to watch out for, including a £1 million fund, to reward those areas delivering the most effective and innovative plans to bring their town centres back to life.

"The prospect of a £1 million prize fund will spur on our efforts to spend this £10,000 in an imaginative way that will really make a difference for Marple," said Ms Jackson.

Marple’s successful Portas Bid was led by Marple Vision Partnership on behalf of a consortium consisting of Marple Vision Partnership, Marple Business Forum, Marple Civic Society and Stockport Council.

The Town Team consists of representatives of supporting groups and organisations in Marple.
