Arthur Procter went along to Romiley Station's 150 celebration and he's provided a selection of photographs here:

Because Marple station was not in use for another year - we could have a happy 149th birthday.

It was just a bit of planning ahead   ;D

Never mind Amazon - it's a good excuse for Marple to have another celebration later!   :D

I'd agree with 14th June 1863 then!

It could tie in nicely with next year's carnival..?

Warwick Burton - in the history of Marple Railways -suggests that the first train to make it into Marple Station from Romiley was "Rattlesnake" the 0-6-0 constructor's train on Sunday 14 June 1863.

Should that be adopted as the date?

Then they had to dig away forward to New Mills after that and the first official train through was 1st July 1865.

Should that be adopted as the date?

Sounds like a great idea to me.

What date did Marple station actually open? I've just noticed whoever updated the Wikipedia page must have it wrong as they've listed 1862, same as Romiley.

The railway pages here seem to suggest services began 1st July 1865, yet the viaduct was completed April 1863 - something that could be celebrated by itself.

"it was not until 1st July 1865 that the line onwards from Compstall to Marple and New Mills was opened"

Coming soon to a station near you - 150 years of transport.

Romiley - wonderful place and new home to Alan - celebrates 150 years of transport links by rail as the first train arrived at Romiley Station on 2nd August 1862 - seems like only yesterday to some of us.

With the Friends of Romiley Railway Station (Yes they exist), those funny looking people over t'valley are getting ready to celebrate in September - would it be worthwhile considering the same for Marple's big day?

Arguments for include any excuse for a party, arguments against include that unlike Romiley there is little left of the original station.
