I'm delighted to report that we've had a written pledge for £50 from Romiley Marple & District Lions Club today. The Lions, who meet in the Navigation Hotel every 2nd and 4th Tuesday in the month, are another group who are part of our on-line community - visit their page by clicking here.

A big thank you to the Lions! You've taken our current total to £620  '<img'>

We were very pleased to receive another £50 from Etherow Community Council today, taking our total at present to £570.

We've also had two good articles in this week's Stockport Express and tonight's Manchester Evening News, the latter having tracked down and interviewed Joe Goodwin's son, Cliff, and included an excellent two page spread - well done MEN!

The following update is pasted from the appeal page on the main web site. It's possible that other funds have been paid in that we don't know about yet as we've had one or two other unconfirmed pledges. I hope to get to the bank tomorrow in time to check.

Quote
We issued a press release about the appeal earlier this week and hopefully the story will have appeared in at least one or two local papers by now - keep your eyes peeled and please let us know if you see an article in any of them.

The appeal is progressing very well and this week we've received cheques from Marple Business Forum and the Rotary Club of New Mills, Marple and District. Marple Community Council have already paid their contribution directly into the bank, and we've received a pledge from Marple Carnival Committee, thank you, and a confirmed donation from at least one local resident.

In addition, we've just learnt that Stockport's Marple Area Committee were unable to consider our application for money from their flexibility budget, as this is not an appropriate use of these funds. To more than make amends, our six Local Councillors from North and South Marple Wards have put their hands in their own pockets and donated £10 each to the appeal. So thank you to Councillors Shan Alexander, Chris Baker, Andrew Bispham, Martin Candler, Chris Elwood and Mark Hunter for demonstrating their support for our idea. This is particularly fitting as it was local Councillor J.T. Pott who was the driving force behind Joe Goodwin's award in 1916.

We've had provisional discussions with local jewellers, A J Prags of Marple, on Market Street, about supplying a watch and they've agreed that in the event of it being purchased from them, they'll make their own contribution by way of a discount. We certainly favour this as we'd like to keep everything as local as possible.

Confirmed funds currently stand as follows, thank you again to everyone who has contributed so far:

Marple Business Forum £250
Marple Councillors £60
Marple Community Council £50
The Rotary Club £50
Marple Carnival Committee £50
Marple Promotions £50
Local Residents £10
Current Total £520

I'm pleased to confirm that Marple Community Council's contribution of £50 has been received - thank you MCC '<img'>

In addition, we've today had a confirmed pledge for £50 from the Rotary Club of New Mills, Marple & District, whose web pages we host on the Marple site.  ''

It seems there have been some teething troubles at the bank with at least one of the cashiers being a little unsure about the account name. We believe this has now been cleared up and it should be easy to pay your money in using the details as described below. Please let us know how you get on, especially if there are any problems.

We are also pleased to announce that we have submitted an application to Stockport Council's Marple Area Committee asking if they will consider making a contribution to the appeal from their area flexibility budget. It has been confirmed that this will be on the agenda of the next Marple Area Committee meeting to be held at Marple Library, starting at 6.00 pm, on 14 January 2004. Peter will speak on behalf of the appeal and it would be great if lots of people attend to show their support.

Yes, it was Chris on the Queen's broadcast. I think he's a bit peeved that she didn't send him a Christmas card - Charles did! On the other hand, she did recognise him, I think he's probably been on the TV as often as her this year '<img'>

Yes, I'm sure it was Chris too!

The bank have taken longer to set the account up than they originally told us. There was a hiccup with the paperwork but that was resolved more than a week ago.

The last time we spoke with them (Monday) they said everything was fine and should be completed within a couple of days, which is what they said the previous week. When it is complete we should receive a welcome pack / paying in book / account number etc. We haven't yet but with the Christmas post it could be anywhere!

We'll be rattling the door next time they open and will publish the account details as soon as we get them, in the meantime, please bear with us.

Am I right in thinking that I just saw Chris speaking to the Queen in her Christmas broadcast?
For a local lad he doesn't half move in posh circles!

It may be of interest that Chris' investiture will take place on 25th February at Buckingham Palace.
