Starting this week, rail passengers on the Hope Valley line between Manchester and Sheffield now have more services to choose from.
Transport for Greater Manchester, in response to feedback from passengers, has worked with Derbyshire County Council, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, the Hope Valley and High Peak Community Rail Partnership, Network Rail and Northern Rail to provide an extra service in each direction during the evening Monday to Friday peak-time period.
There will also be a new service for Chinley passengers.
The much-needed new service will run from Sheffield to Manchester at 18:14, filling what was previously a two-hour gap in the timetable, and trains from Manchester to Sheffield will depart at 16:45 and 17:48. The 17:18 service will now run to New Mills Central.
Chinley will also have a service via Stockport, leaving Manchester Piccadilly at 17:23 and extending the service that has previously terminated at Hazel Grove.
Councillor Doreen Dickinson, Chair of Transport for Greater Manchester’s Metrolink and Rail Network Sub-committee, said:
“It’s important that services are timetabled to best suit passengers’ needs – especially on a route like the Hope Valley line, where there are important stopping services between two major northern cities.
“For those working in Manchester or Sheffield, the Hope Valley line is a vital commuter route.
“It also serves people visiting both cities for shopping and leisure activities and provides access to some of the region’s most beautiful countryside.
“Transport for Greater Manchester has worked closely with neighbouring authorities, and with Network Rail and Northern Rail, to ensure that Hope Valley passengers have the services they need, and we fully expect them to be well-used throughout the year.
“The government has acknowledged that rail improvements play an important role in strengthening the economy.
“There can be no stronger example of that than providing capacity for people’s journeys to work.
“We now need central government to turn its attention to confirming its commitments to completion of the Northern Hub proposals.”
