Pupils as PC?  We had students until a few years ago and then everything was re-branded as learners because ... The learners search for information on how to use the educational tools, play around with them and experiment in the classroom.  The students wait for a training session or workshop, attend them, complete assignments but there is not a significant change in the use of the tools... which begged the question why was our Students' Association not a Learners' Association and why were they not affiliaited to the National Union of Learners.

This was in-line with the push to identify and implement policy on catering for all learning styles - kinesthetic etc - and show that we can "offer blended learning whilst addressing differentiation" - which was the latest government tick-list.

All change over the summer - we now have a Head of Student Services again (Not Learner Services) and the paperwork is being re-printed and the signage changed back.  Could it be that most people in FEd and HEd like to be called students?

I emailed Marple Hall asking them about the fence:

"I am certain that you support the school in ensuring that one of our main
priorities is the safeguarding of  our young learners and unfortunately we do at
times have to consider the best way in undertaking this measure even though it
may go against a freely accessible facility. In addition, as you will be aware
any public property  is vulnerable to intruders and unfortunately we have been
the victim of crime on a number of occasion that has led to significant costs in
order to mend damaged windows and replace stolen items. The fence will act as a
deterrent."

I did also ask about using the sports facilities ie the astro turf and pitches, and her reply to that was that the public could still use them, by booking in the normal procedure, but I do know that our club are not able to use Marple Hall until at least sept 30th.

Is the word "pupil" out of date now, or considered no longer PC for some reason?

I was there this morning watching my son play football. Didn't see anything wrong with it.

Visited MHS last week after having read these posts - I think I was expecting some kind of barbed wire fence with dog patrols and searchlights! But actually, its a green link fence about 7 foot tall, and in my opinion didn't really look that bad. I do think its a pity they felt they had to take this measure, but to be honest I don't really think they can be blamed for wanting to protect themselves from vandalism, and maybe control who accesses school premises, especially these days.

I did hear about the fence from my kids who described it as like a prison!! But it doesn't bother me as I am sure they have good reason. Lots of schools are targets of repeated vandal attacks and if it keeps kids safer aswell then that is good. At the end of the day it is up to the school.

We generally hear on the grapevine when the school has had problems with vandalism and burglary.. Know there was an issue a couple of years ago during the summer but not heard of any since.  I do know that a lot of people use the tennis courts and playground  .. and yes without permission... in the evenings and during holidays which I also did as a kid. I think this is an action by the new head myself and is not appropriate for this particular school.  Such a shame.

Unfortunately, MHS is not on it's own in the need for security arrangements. Not so much to keep the pupils in (although that would be no bad thing ;) ) but to keep vandals and thieves out. A new primary school I pass in Hyde has a ten foot spiked fence round it.

There is also the issue of unauthorised persons entering the site during the school day (shades of Dunblane). A lot of primary schools lock their perimeter gates during the day.

I've scim-read the entire thing and see no mention of the need for a fort knox style fence.
