On the ordinance survey map c1875 it is a well. Ray.

If you do a search on the forum it's been bought up a few times. I only remember as I used to play round there a child, that's why it stuck in my head. I had all sorts of wild imaginings of what it was back then! I was disappointed to find out it's just an old well   ::)
Yep, my Dad who moved to Marple in 1926 when he was six and was a chorister at All Saints told me that it was a well.

Does anyone know what the steps are across from All Saints Church are ?  At school we were told that they were a bolt hole for a priest and that the passage led down to the Canal.  I contacted All Saints via their web page but they too were unsure what the steps were and said that they had nothing to do with the church  ???
