The Co-op Car Park
« Reply #10 on: January 12, 2010, 01:18:18 AM »

When using this car park I have been accustomed to getting a ticket from the machine  and getting the fee refunded against my shopping.

However if going to Blockbusters, Mellor Braggins, Archers or Hollins or any of the other local shops I cant have a refund.

If I don't get a tickets then I run the risk of the car park attendant getting out of his hiding place, either in a parked car or some other secluded area and slapping a penalty notice on me.

I was discussing this the other day with a long standing Marple resident and he told me that a penalty charge was not enforceable as it seems that this area of land was gifted to the Residents of Marple.

Can anyone confirm this or enlighten me please?

Co-op Car Park
The shops on the Hollins were built and most of them occupied by 1963. The car park at the rear of these shops was a puplic car park specifically for the use of customers of the shops on the Hollins. The shops were leased from the owners who were The Coal Board Superannuation Scheme, who rented the shops out on a 25 year lease, which included the  use of the car park at the rear for customers of the shops and the occupiers of the flats above. I know because I was part of the firm who occupied the shop next to Barclays Bank,
Bramwell & Singleton Ltd, Domestic Appliances.
I was given to understand that Stockport MBC sold the land to the Co-op to build the super store (which didn't do the traders on Market Street any favours). The car park which was for the use of the puplic of Marple, I believe was sold to the Co-op by Stockport MBC for £75,000.
I do not need to park my car on there, if I did I certainly would not pay. If I recieved a parking ticket I would go to court and challenge the legality of them charging and Stockport MBC for selling the land to them.

i have found as a pedestrian co-op car park a nightmare as the way in it through the middle of the car park or over the entry/exit of the car park, both just as tricky as each other. '<img'>

Thanks for the heads up on this..

I got cought in Romiley some time ago.. £40 fine for parking behind Romiley Forum on a satuday morning for 5 minutes.. I had no change for the machine and went into the supermarket to get some. (had to buy something! )

I bought my parking ticket on the way back to the car.. and already had a parking fine upon my return.

The car park was empty and I had been literally 5 minutes the printed time on my ticket matched the time on the penalty ticket.

I wrote to explain.. but the council ignored my plea!

I haven't shopped in Romiley since. (petty I know! )

Yes Tricky, the 10p fee is refunded (I think it's still 10p), but the problem is forgetting to pay it. One should not forget, I know, but a little absent mindedness, can cost a lot even though you might be using local traders.

Incidental, I was chatting to a local resident yesterday about this very thing and he told me that parking charges on the co-op car park were not enforceable, as apparently the land was designated for exclusive use of Marple residents without a charge. I don't know if this is correct, does Mr Noble know the answer to this?

I haven't been there for a while... Is the fee for parking not refunded in the shop anymore then?

How much is it now?

At this time of year parking at the Co-op is hard enough as it is - if there was no control it would be impossible.  Happy Christmas to the enforcers, I say.   '<img'>

8.AM Sat Morning.Just been to the Co_op, Don't forget to get your ticket from the machine. There are two parking ticket issuers there this morning, complete with cameras, I male and 1 Female. I suppose they will be there Christmas Eve as well.

Merry Christmas to the Co-op and Exell Parking, or should I say HUMBUG!
