Age Concern Stockport, supported by partners Stockport Council and the Stockport Express and Times, have launched a campaign aimed at raising over £10,000 towards keeping older people throughout the borough warm and well this winter.

Launched as part of the ‘Kill the Chill’ campaign, all of the money raised will go towards supplying older people with winter essentials including fleece blankets, portable heaters, hand warmers, room thermometers and information leaflets.
Many older people will suffer from the effects of the cold this winter and last year there were 212 excess deaths caused by the cold in Stockport.
As the ‘Winter Warmth’ thermometer shows, the campaign has currently raised almost £4,000. Further fundraising events are due to take place over the coming weeks with a sponsored abseil planned for December 13th and a Race Night due to be held at the Phoenix Pub in Hazel Grove on December 19th.
Anyone wishing to make a donation to the fund can do so by logging on to: www.justgiving.com/abseilwinterwarmth
Councillor Maggie Clay, Executive Member for Adults and Health at Stockport Council, said: “It’s important that we all do everything we can to make sure people keep warm and healthy this winter. Age Concern is providing basic, practical help such as providing heaters for people who have no heating whatsoever. The Kill the Chill Winter Warmth fund raising campaign is a fantastic initiative that will provide winter essentials to as many people as possible.”
Margaret Brade, Chief Executive of Age Concern Stockport, said: “The Winter Warmth campaign aims to raise vital funds, in excess of £10,000 if possible, and every penny raised will directly benefit Stockport residents this winter. The support of all Stockport residents is so important and I would encourage anyone who is interested in attending any of our events or supporting the fund raising campaign to visit the ‘justgiving’ website or contact us.”
