Your'e views on Stockports bid for £200 million to renovate secondary schools

Stockport Council wants people's views on its bid for government funding of over £200 million to renovate or rebuild the borough's ageing secondary schools.

The Council is bidding to join the national Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, and, if successful, may receive up to £212 million over 12 years to transform school buildings throughout the borough which are not fit for purpose.

Councillor Mark Weldon, Executive Member for Children & Young People, urged everyone with an interest in education in the borough to comment. "These are exciting times for schools in the borough. Education has moved on considerably since the last secondary school was built in Stockport in 1976. Many schools were, in fact, built over 50 years ago. We now want more flexible open spaces with easy access to high quality ICT. We also want to offer new facilities to local people and communities. Our school buildings and the resources need to be available to the wider community and for longer hours."

"We hope that local residents and anyone else involved with education in Stockport will take part in this crucial debate about the future of our secondary schools," he added.

There is a wealth of information on the bid on the Council website (free access to the web in all Stockport libraries). Click onto www.stockport.gov.uk/haveyoursay. You can phone 0161 218 1074 with any queries.

There are several ways to comment on the Council's Strategy for Change for secondary education:
