Burglars have their calendar marked (Stockport)

Police in Stockport are determined to ensure that Christmas doesn’t come early for burglars.

During recent years Stockport division has seen a high volume of burglaries committed in the lead up to Christmas between October and the end of December compared to the months before and after.

Despite the division seeing a sharp decrease in burglaries during this period last year, 325 compared to 635 in 2006, a larger percentage of these break-ins were carried out overnight.

In response Stockport division has launched a new night initiative. Operation Jurong will seek to prevent and detect burglary offences while also gathering intelligence to identify offenders and reassure residents.

The operation will increase the number of police patrols working in the most vulnerable areas of Stockport and see the deployment of dedicated Police Community Support Officers during the afternoon periods.

Sergeant John Brazier said: “While Stockport saw a fall in burglary last year it still remains a priority and we have identified this period as one that requires special attention. Nights are drawing in providing more opportunities for burglars and the impending recession is likely to further fuel this situation.”
