I've just watched this on TV, well worth watching if it becomes available on the BBC iPlayer if you haven't seen it. in the 1960s, the 08.10 train from Marple to Stockport via Tiviot Dale would have taken 12 minutes. Now, a woman can run from Cross Lane to Stockport Station faster than a car can drive, departing at the same time...

Broadcaster Stuart Maconie takes a look at the effect of the Beeching railway cuts in the 1960s, and asks how much they are to blame for traffic problems in the North West.

Article in the stockport express wrote that this shows how Beeching sold the north west down the "road" taking away the rail links from Marple to Stockport and also the Rose hill link to High lane.
