MARPLE NWR SUMMER PROGRAMME 2023

The Marple Branch of the National Women's Register (NWR) meet fortnightly on Monday evenings in members' homes to discuss all subjects, for example cultural and political matters. They also have trips to the theatre and meals out etc. and there is a book club too.

All meetings start at 7.45 pm unless otherwise stated:

17th April: Have you ever had a Saturday or Student job in addition to your later career? What skills did you learn? Host: Sue D.
24th April: Free Speech. How safe is it to speak out? Are we being silenced? Host: Gini
15th May: Your place in the family. Were you an only child or from a large family? How has this influenced you in later life? Host: Chris S.
22nd May: Research a Saint. More or less well known. Host: Kate
5th June: 'Benelux'-NWR themed countries for 2023. Research one of these 3 countries and we will taste some typical food and drink. Further details nearer the time. Host: Sue S.
12th June: Informal social afternoon Dobbies Garden centre 2pm
19th June: Invasive species-Is our wildlife under more of a threat than ever?
3rd July: Evening walk and/or possible walking treasure hunt around Marple followed by programme planning in a local hostelry! Further details nearer the time. Host: Sue P.
17th July: Summer BBQ-Please wear your favourite colour. Venue to be confirmed.

** Possible extra meeting at Dobbies, 2pm on Monday 10th July if enough interest**

16th January: AGM and Research  'New Year Customs Around the World'. Host: Sue Davies.
30th January: Visit to CHADS theatre - Alan Ayckbourn's play 'Round and Round the Garden', Names and money (£12) to Sue Davies asap.
13th February: Share a piece of your favourite music. Host: Kate.
27th February: Discussion evening 'Is social media making us less social?' Host: Dorothy.
6th March: Informal afternoon meeting at Dobbies: Dobbies Garden centre 2pm.
13th March: Who would you like to invite for dinner and why? Host: Sue Seal.
27th March: The Big Read - NWR 2023. Choose, read and discuss a book from the 12 books listed in the Autumn magazine. Host: Shelagh.

12th September Visit to the Garrick Theatre to see 'Happy Jack' by John Godber. 2 for 1 offer on Monday evenings-£6 each (Names to Sue P asap as booking now open).
26th September Discussion about alternative energy-green/hydrogen/nuclear fusion. What does the future hold?
10th October MHA and TR? Want to know more? Kate and Sue will talk to us about their very different roles in these 2 organisations.
24th October Possible trip to our local Regent Cinema or The Light cinema in Stockport - further details nearer the time depending on the programme.
31st October Afternoon tea at Dobbies garden centre- meet there at 2pm.
14th November The famous Annual Telephone Treasure trail-further details nearer the time.
28th November Come and try your hand at Bottle painting. All equipment supplied apart from a favourite empty bottle (or two).
12th December Christmas Miscellany with Mince pies- please bring along your favourite poem/reading or Christmas memory.

10th January: Guess the Year. Have 5 clues ready for us to guess the year you have chosen.
24th January: The origin of place names-tell us about where you were born or have lived.
7th February: What is the scariest thing you have ever done? Are you risk averse or do you welcome a new challenge?
21st February: How Green are you?  Have you visited 'Lentils and Lather' in Marple?  Do you try to live a sustainable lifestyle, re-using and refilling to reduce plastic waste?  What else could you do differently?
7th March: Overlooked spouses of famous people. Do they choose to live in the shadow of their well known partner?
21st March: Do It Yourself Quiz. Please come prepared with 5 questions beginning with the same letter eg What, Which, How etc.
4th April: Afternoon walk-(weather permitting). Meet at 1pm in the Old Hare and Hounds car park at Otterspool for a circular walk to Woodbank, Bredbury Green and Chadkirk. Approx 4 miles. Stout shoes or boots required.

6th September: The oldest book in my bookcase
20th September: Your favourite poet and why. Share an example of their work with us
4th October: X and Y – discuss anything you choose which begins with either of these letters
18th October: Discuss a literary or artistic connection with any place that you have visited
1st November: It has been proposed that we should have an afternoon social depending on prevailing circumstances. Obviously this plan may be subject to revision
15th November: Telephone Treasure Trail!
29th November: Tell us about your least favourite fictional character
13th December: The traditional Christmas get together with mince pies, Christmas readings and jolly festive cheer. An afternoon meeting was suggested but this can be discussed again later – and in light of the situation at the time
