A milestone moment!

The Boys Brigade photos uploaded this morning have taken the total images on the Virtual Tour to 10,000!

They've been viewed an amazing 2,652,779 times.

A handful of images relating to Marple Boys Brigade have been uploaded to the Virtual History Tour this morning, including a couple of pics of the original 1929 enrollment certificate recently discovered in a re-used photo frame. There are also a few c 1955 pictures of Leslie Atkinson provided by his sister Hilary. Unfortunately we don't know any of the other names at the moment but if you can identify any of them please do share!

If the mill was demolished in 1957 and Marple hall demolished in 1959, how come the sun dial is in memorial park? That doesn't add up unless things were stripped from Marple hall prior to it being demolished!

A good question Jay! The decline of Marple Hall was well advanced in 1954. Here's a quote from a longer article in the Manchester Guardian of 7 April 1954:

Lead looters have stripped the roof, and a magnificent sundial which stood outside the main entrance on a tier of steps was recently pushed over for no other reason than as a trial of somebody's strength. It was rescued before it could be hammered into pieces, and now stands in Marple Park as a gift to the village.

This was around the time that the stained glass was moved to Bunbury Church and it became a race against the vandals to save whatever was possible. As I understand it (and the pictures on the tour show) it was only when the hall was a total ruin that it was "demolished" in 1959.

This dates the picture in question to some time between 1954 and 1957:

A mixed bag of 24 images provided by local postcard collector Janet Holmes have been uploaded to the Virtual Tour this morning. Janet has kindly made her full collection available and more will be uploaded over the coming weeks / months. It's also pleasing to note that we have now passed 2.5 Million image views on the tour and with Janet's help will soon have 10,000+ images on-line.
