This is the link from the BBC News website from 2004. It seems it's down to the LEAs ti implement these changes.

There is also the long-term proposal to change the whole school system to one of 5 terms per year with no half-terms and shorter summer holidays. Though I haven't heard anything more about the proposals for a long time now.

In some other local authorities e.g. Manchester both primary and secondary have only one week at Whitsun then finish together which makes sense.

As far as I can remember it has always been this way, I can't see the system changing now. Families have had to make childcare arrangements in every school holiday not just the summer one. I am lucky and only work term time, which saves me huge childcare cost's! For those of you who still have to work, there are some great summer activities going on in the area for the children  '<img'>  Happy holidays!  ':p'

Maybe the primary schools could work around Marple Hall??

I have also had one child off and one still at school, but Im extremely lucky, childcare hasnt been an issue for me.

marple hall only has i week off at whit week in may because all the exams for year 11 start when they go back. primary schools have two weeks off though. so marple hall and other comprehensives get their week back in the summer hols. seen as all the exams in every comp school has to be done at the same time there's not alot that can be done. it was this way when i was at marple hall and that was a good 25+ years ago '<img'>  '<img'>

I think that it has something to do with the whit holidays that some have 1 week off and the others 2 weeks off.

This week I have had one set of  Grandchildren  on Holidays and the other at school.

They are all in Stockport Schools. Mother is working and so has to make arrangements for the well being and supervision of those not at school.

Its OK for parents who can call on grandparents and relatives to look after the kids, but there are many mothers (or fathers) who can't. Marple Hall is off this week and the juniors and infants start next week.

Surely it would make good sense all round for the holidays to start and end together.

Perhaps there is a good reason for this, if there is I would like to know
