James Shenton, a Marple resident and a teacher in Ashton Under Lyne, is currently studying for a Master’s degree in photography (online) through Falmouth University. Inspired by his own time spent on the canal with his four-year-old daughter, Nancy, James has been focusing his Final Major Project on the local community in Stockport, documenting the one-mile stretch of the canal between Plucksbridge Road and Marple Lock Flight.

Here is what James says:

"What I came to realise during daily walks along this stretch, was that whilst the canal is very much part of the fabric of the community, contact between its users is so often transient and fleeting. I saw an opportunity to collate and celebrate the rich and fascinating individual stories of the people who live on, or enjoy, this space. To not only bring me closer to my community, but to do the same for others too.

My artist statement can be read here https://www.jamesnicholasphotography.com/artist-statement-bridge-to-the-lock (https://www.jamesnicholasphotography.com/artist-statement-bridge-to-the-lock)

I recently created a short booklet of images of the portraits taken throughout Summer and Autumn 2020, placing copies in your ‘Book Share’ box (Brickbridge Road) on the canal, encouraging residents to browse and pass on to others. There will be a self-published book covering the whole project in July

As the project and work develop I will be holding an exhibition on the canal in Marple at the top locks on the towpath on 24th/25th July, as well as publishing a final book.
