Delighted to launch Friends of Marple Memorial Park's latest project working with Art Stop CIC to create a fantastic new mural on the former Bowling Pavilion in the park.
Did you know that it was built by soldiers returning from WWI in memory of their comrades who didn't?

Friends of Marple Memorial Park Pavilion Art Project
We are running an exciting new Art Competition!
Winners will get their work to be part of a new collaborative Intergenerational Mural to be located on the rear wall of the former Bowling Pavilion building in Marple Memorial Park.
There are 80 places to be won.
All ages are welcome.
You do not have to be a ‘great artist’ to participate just someone who enjoys being creative.
First Round
Colour Sketch phase due by September 14th.
All the art is going to be painted with acrylics on different sized plywood circles so we would like to see colour sketches within a circle please.
You can use our template or just draw around a dinner plate.
Please make sure your name, age and how to contact you are on your sketch and you can let us know a little about your idea. Sketches can be scanned / photographed and emailed to pavilionart@marplememorialpark.org.uk by September 14th.
Sarah of @Stationery Supplies Marple has kindly offered to be a place to pick up a template and drop off finished sketches.
Members of Friends of Memorial Park and Art Stop will judge the sketches and then if your work has been successful you will be notified and given the next set of instructions on how to complete your finished work for the Mural.
The theme is "Show us what you love most about our park and what it means to you. How did it help you during lock-down, what aspects did you miss the most about it and are so glad to have returning?"
Here is a list of idea starters.
- The former Bowling Pavilion and its (unknown?) history.
- The war memorial and its significance.
- The information boards about the Marple soldiers who fell.
- The information lecterns, the history of Marple as a past industrial town.
- Hollins Mill / mill workers.
- The historical artefacts within the park.
- The gifting of the park to the town by the Carver/Barlow family.

- The park as a place of beauty - the flower beds.
- The park as a place of refuge, natural and green.
- The park's wildlife, flora and fauna.
- The views of Mellor Moor.
- The park as an exercise space.
- The play areas (as they are or as you remember - boating pool for example).
- The skatepark.
- Football, tennis, cricket, basketball / ball games for groups and families.
- The Bowling Green / Veterans' Bowling Club.
- The Boules Court.
- A place for dog walking.
- Picnic benches, family picnics.

Thank you to Marple Area Committee for supporting this project!
Last night Marple Area Committee kindly approved a request for £775 to pay for the hard-standing in front of our mural on the former Bowling Pavilion.
The hard standing surface is needed to ensure safe access for all types of pedestrians to get up close and view the roundel artworks, including visitors with prams or pushchairs, wheelchair and mobility scooter users, or less mobile walkers.
Thank you to local councillors for supporting this project and your kind comments about it during your meeting.

Inspiration for Friends of Marple Memorial Park's Pavilion Art Project
It would be lovely to have the 'Midnight the owl' sculpture remembered in our Marple Park mural and lots of magical imagination could be added in to this piece.

Funding of Friends of Marple Memorial Park Pavilion Art Project
(https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_banners/1285620894388428801/1595856575/1500x500)
The full Pavilion Art Project includes artwork on both sides of the former Bowling Pavilion.
Following an unsuccessful £10k bid to Awards for All last year for the full project, Friends of Marple Memorial Park decided to reduce the funding commitment needed to get started by splitting the project into two phases. We have chosen to tackle the Pavilion Art Roundels on the rear of the building first, as it will will have the greatest visibility and involve more volunteer artists. It also provides the strongest link with the successful Rose Hill Station Intergenerational Art Project.
In February 2020 Friends of the Park committed £2,200 of our existing funds (raised by our 50-50 Club and 2019 Treasure Hunt) towards Phase I.
A minimum of £1,500 of further community support was needed to enable Phase I to begin and this was generously awarded by The Macnair Trust in May 2020. As this was in the middle of lock-down it was not possible to start immediately but the funds were committed to the project by The Macnair Trust (https://www.marple.website/community/436-macnair-trust.html) pending us being able to start once restrictions were lifted sufficiently.
In addition to the funding provided by FoMMP and the Trust, we hoped that Marple Area Committee would be able to fund the hard-standing works needed. As already reported, this was awarded at the July Area Committee meeting.
Macnair Trust Funds now received
We are delighted to report that The Macnair Trust (https://www.marple.website/community/436-macnair-trust.html) funds have now been received and we are all systems go on Phase I! Here is what the trust recently said about the project:
As a small local charity, the Macnair Trust may use its funds only to further strictly defined charitable objectives which benefit the public within the Marple area, so that geographically the Memorial Park could hardly be more central. We are absolutely delighted to be involved with the Pavilion Roundels Art Project, which ticks so many of the boxes in terms of causes we are more than happy to support.
By bringing new life to a building of historic significance it will preserve and greatly enhance local amenities and the park itself. In particular, it will encourage open-air recreational activities and contribute towards the welfare of local children, whilst promoting art for the benefit of the public.
Phase II - Under Canopy Artwork
Phase II is planned as a large collaborative mural under the gated canopy of the former Bowling Pavilion. The intention is that this will be visible from far across the park. Look out for more about this once we get Phase I fully underway and we begin to raise funds for this too.

Making good progress on the varnishing..
Each roundel needs 3 generous coats of Golden MSA high quality varnish letting them dry for 2 or 3 days in between coats. Then they need time to ‘cure’. The varnish really enhances the work bringing out the details. They are looking absolutely beautiful!

Monday 28 June 2021: Pavilion Art Project Roundels Installation
It was wonderful for Friends of the Park to work with Tracy, Pete and Rhian from Art Stop today to install the roundel artwork painted by Marple people of all ages during the 2020 lockdown.
We are delighted with the outcome of this project and especially thankful to Tracy McGuinness-Kelly for her hard work, enthusiasm and ability to work in innovative ways to overcome the difficulties imposed by the Covid19 pandemic while complying with government guidelines at all times.
Thanks to everyone who contributed artwork - they are all wonderful but when displayed together become more than the sum of their parts.
Thanks also to the Macnair Trust for your contribution toward the funding for this project, and to all our volunteers who have helped in different ways.
We have a few small jobs to finish things off, then it's hopefully onwards and upwards for Phase II of this project.

Pavilion Art Project Phase II: Artwork installed!
The Artwork for Friends of Marple Memorial Park's Pavilion Art Project Phase II was installed today.
The artwork commemorates 100 years since the Dedication of Marple War Memorial Park and Historical Pageant on 22 July 1922 using photos taken on the day.
The artwork can be viewed in close-up during Marple Carnival on 18 June 2022 and during Friends of the Park Task Days.
Huge thank you to Peter Kelly and Tracy Mcguinness-Kelly of Art Stop CIC and to Bernard Kelly for his help today and also doing most of the painting work to get the pavilion ready.
