Marple Website online Adventure Film Festival

Stumbled across this great film from Gnarly Bay called "Sand in the Sky" and it gave a few minutes distraction from current matters.

It's a similar type of film to those shown at the Marple Scouts Adventure Film Festival to raise funds for the Scout Hut,

I'll look at sharing another one tomorrow and feel free to share any that inspire you in this thread too.

Today's film is one that was shown at the last Marple Scouts Adventure Film Festival in November 2019.

"Ultra-runners overcome obstacles on every trail. In this film, Force of Nature Mirna Valerio overcomes the negative voices that don’t believe she belongs in the sport."

Today's film is a longer one but it's a real cracker - gives me the collywobbles just watching it!

Six friends embark on a determined quest to climb, and then BASE jump 'The Lorax', a formidable climb on Frenchman's Cap in remote western Tasmania. Surrounded by some of the most pristine wilderness in all of Australia, they contend with extreme weather and rugged terrain, relying on each other's skills and humour to fulfil their mission.

In the steep mountain jungles of Nepal’s Hongu river valley, members of the isolated Kulung culture have risked their lives for generations scaling dangerous cliffs to collect a wild and toxic honey. Deep and dark, the film glides through a misty world of forest spirits, dreams, and woodsmoke to share the story of the leader of the harvest and his final journey.

The photography in this one is incredible. Although you can watch all these films while they are embedded in the forum page, the experience will be better if you view them full-size. To do that click the little icon to expand them full-screen.

After The Last Honey Hunter's torment about how he lived his life yesterday, and eventually took it, today's film is a little more uplifting as we "witness the joys and wonders of nature through the eyes of Snowflake, an eccentric Swiss skier with a life philosophy just as beautiful and perfectly unique as his namesake".

As Snowflake is only 7 minutes long I've just popping in one of my favourites that you may have seen before but is definitely worth a second or third watch. It's called Weightless by Jean-Baptiste Chandelier:

Today I'm going back to one of the best films from Marple Scouts Film Festival, A Mile an Hour, so for those who've already seen it I've popped in another called Danny Day Care.

So first, Beau Miles "A different kind of marathon; running one lap an hour, for 24hrs, around my perfectly mile long block. The rest of the time I do as much as possible; making things, odd jobs, fixing stuff. It's about running, doing, and thinking."

I'm a big fan of canoeing but I'd not come across the sport of vertical kayaking before. Every year there is a Kayak Short Film Competition and the best 3 entries are put together in a reel. Today's addition is from 2017 but if you like it you can watch many others on Youtube. You may get some adverts popping in but you can skip or close them after a few seconds.

Today's film is called "The Imaginary Line". It's a about a team of "slack-liners" from the USA and Mexico who wanted to make a statement about unity across the border.

Is anyone else watching and enjoying these daily videos in addition to amazon and me?

It would be great to know what you think of them so far, which is your favourite, and maybe receive some nominations for new additions too.

Marple Website online Adventure Film Festival

I was in several minds about what to put up as today's offering, I've got some really good ones lined up. But I was fascinated by the short clip within yesterday's film of the guy flying through the hole in the rock in his wingsuit. It's got to be the most dangerous thing I think I've ever seen. I found out that he was Uli Emanuele, an Italian base jumper, and he was famous for that flight and also for flying through a ring of fire. Uli died in a crash at Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland in August 2016 while shooting a new video.

So today, here's a closer look at that crazy stunt by Eli:

And here's a video of another wingsuit flyer called Jeb Corliss flying through Tianmen Cave in China in 2011. If you search for Jeb Corless you'll find that he had a very serious accident the year after he did this but came back to fly again. Apparently there is a video of the accident published too:

Changing Course: Clare Gallagher was headed toward medical school, until she realized the path everyone else wanted her to take wouldn’t make her happy. So she took one step back, 100 miles forward, and went in a new direction:

The Road From Karakol: In summer 2011, Outdoor Research athlete Kyle Dempster took off on his bike across Kyrgyzstan with a couple mostly-accurate maps, a trailer full of climbing gear, and a vocabulary of 10 Kyrgyz words. He spent two months pedaling and pushing the bike more than 1200 km on roads of variable states of neglect, wading through wild rivers, dealing with corrupt military checkpoint staff, and soloing a handful of unclimbed alpine rock and mixed routes. He recorded the journey, his camera his only partner, friend, and sometimes the only receiving end of his conversations for days at a time.

Stunning scenery and a thought-provoking message today:

Loved By All: The Story of Apa Sherpa: Every spring the summit of Mount Everest draws people from around the world. But in its shadow live the Sherpa, a resilient, religious people, who, despite the riches surrounding the highest peak on earth, are still quite poor and uneducated. A child of the Khumbu, Apa Sherpa climbed Everest 21 times. Pulled away at the age of 12 to work as a high altitude porter, like so many others, he would leave his family for months, risking his life on the mountain. Through his work at the Apa Sherpa Foundation, he aims to create a different future for his people. As Apa says, "without education we have no choice."

A couple of short contrasting films today, bedlam and serenity comes to mind!

Bedlam first with Drainage Ditch Kayaking: "This is sketch. I don't like this at all." Rush Sturges and Ben Marr decide to kayak a drainage ditch in Lions Bay, British Columbia. It's a 800+ meter descent, with top speeds of 45mph.

When a dog named Conga arrives and leads skier Santiago Guzman into the hills with her infectious energy, the windswept landscape becomes a backdrop for the pure joy of two mountain souls sharing a day in the wild.

More inspiration from the older generation today:

Edges: At 90 years old, Yvonne Dowlen was still ice skating at least five days a week. She first laced up her skates on Evergreen Lake in Colorado and rose to fame as an international performer in the Ice Capades. She never officially retired, continuing to skate in figure skating competitions until she was 90 years old. Two days after this film was completed, and just before her 91st birthday, Yvonne passed away. Her family said that she had 'the best last day'-- skating on the ice and living out her lifelong passion. Edges is a celebration of longevity and resilience.

Today we're taking another look at a couple of characters we've already met:

In Industrial Revolutions we see child-minder Danny Macaskill take his incredible bike skills into an industrial train yard and some derelict buildings.

And as that's pretty short, here's another with the likeable Aussie Beau Miles, this time attempting to do Africa by Kayak! In 2007, Beau Miles attempted to paddle the 4000kms from one side of Africa to the other. Starting in Mozambique and continuing along the South African coast Beau allowed 5 months to complete the voyage. With him for over half the journey was Jared Sharples of New Zealand. Together the pair experienced the magnificent coast until Jared, crippled with sickness, left the expedition. Beau paddled alone for 6 weeks, experiencing for the first time in his life, a truly nomadic, solo existence. Battling huge surf, Beau only completed 2000kms of the original plan after realising that his trip wasn't about kilometres gained but rather the quality of the experience.

During my ongoing search for the ultimate surfing video I came across this inspirational short film by Mark Tipple:

Duct Tape Surfing: 18 years ago a slight lapse in concentration crushed Pascale's dreams of surfing. With the help of a family friend and a roll of duct tape; she can now call herself a surfer.

With today's additions the Marple Website Adventure Film Festival has now shared 50 short films on a great variety of subjects and that seems a good point to bring the regular daily updates to a close. I hope some of you have enjoyed a few minutes escape each day and there is nothing to stop you continuing to find similar films on YouTube or Vimeo yourself. Of course you are welcome to share your discoveries with others here if you find anything really good. I may continue to share the occasional film myself in the future but for now this is the last daily update from me.

Solstice: A tribute to the shortest and coolest days of the year when the sun arcs low over the horizon and ice crystals linger in the air. The days skiers love more than any other.
