Title: Has anyone else seen a Sparrowhawk/ large bird of prey on Middlewood Way?
Post by: marplerambler on September 28, 2019, 10:28:23 AM
Yesterday 27/9/2019 I saw a large bird of prey from the rear by the Middlewood Way near to the golf course. Brown. Banded light brown and dark brown square tail (it wasn't forked). Rear of head had two pale spots - almost eyes in the back of the head I had to look hard to ensure that it was not looking over its shoulder. Has anyone else seen it? Any suggestions as to what it might be - I checked my bird book and the best I can come up with is juvenile male sparrowhawk. Have there been any other sightings? Any other suggestions?

Most likely it was a juvenile common buzzard, plenty of them along Strines Valley.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was a buzzard. I had an adult one hovering high over my garden a couple of years ago - it looked enormous even at great height!
