I received the following old Ordnance Survey Maps as a Xmas present.
Alan Godfrey Edition, Cheshire street 20.02 Marple 1896 & Cheshire street 11.14 Compstall 1907.
They are excellent quality detailed maps together with village history and a shop trader & commercial directory on the rear face. They give a interesting insight into how the area looked over 100 yrs ago..

Got to love old maps.

There is also the wonderful Cheshire Tithe Maps site, where you can compare two maps side by side: Cheshire Twin Maps (http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps/TwinMaps.aspx?srch=&singleplot=&hlt=&hlp=&e=340600.03&n=376990.61&scale=1.27&tabL=L3&tabR=R1)
Use the drop-down tab selector to Jump to Marple and select the maps you want to compare in each window then move around, zoom in and out etc. See who owned different plots of land and see how things have changed over the years.
Fascinating stuff and you can lose hours of time on there!
I'm not sure how well it will work on small devices.

On the tin it reads:
"A selection of historical maps focusing on central Manchester are now available to view in the University Library's Digital Image collections (LUNA).
The maps date from the late 18th century to the middle of the 20th century, and comprise private surveys, detailed Ordnance Survey maps and a selection of plans showing the Manchester Ship Canal and Docks.
Maps can be zoomed into street level to examine detail such as building outlines and functions, mill-owners names and the internal layout of public buildings. The LUNA map collection can be searched by key place names such as Ancoats, Castlefield, Hulme and Ardwick"
