So, that small shop sells goods to the value of £832K per year? Really?

And even more exciting a Gross Profit % (With my accountant's hat on I am assuming this is margin not mark up) of £3520 per week.  From this must be taken all running expenses - business rates, staffing, power etc which I am sure Duck Fame will be able to give comparative figures for.  A little gold mine then in term time. Who can resist it particularly with customer parking and the passing trade from the rail travellers.

The customer can resist it. I have resisted it since the day it opened. I was greatly saddened to see a local person take on an empty shop and put his heart , soul and money into a corner shop with friendly service and then see competitors open a store next door  who I believe, rightly or wrongly, were initially financed and subsidised by other stores within the group and who, according to reports on this website led me to believe that were selling booze and cigs to youngsters when they were refused by the Spar shop.

Totally agree. Pass it nearly every weekday, never been in.

I was referring to the rent at 308 per week.

Ah, I see where you are coming from Duke.
I hadn't spotted the weekly rent - just the weekly takings.
Now I've done my sums I work it out at £16k annual rent too.
Apologies, I'm easily confused.

As I recall, Mel was not willing to open normal shop hours, and just wished to be open when he wanted to work.

I know that Rose Hill Store will be open when I need something, therefore I use it.     Hopefully someone like Tesco will buy it, it is just big enough for a Tesco Express.

Hello everyone hope I don't get much hate from people on here for expressing my views telling my part of the story as its only been one sided on here and nobody's spoke on behalf of premier before. Let's start from start when we opened our shop on rose hill there were no intentions of closing someone's business or rivalry. I have read people post that we closed spar next door I humbly want to ask how can someone do it? It was spars high prices and less stock availability which added to many factors I'm gonna state further on so how come were the ones to be blamed. U see competition in all walks and fields of life. Before we opened the wine shop got closed due to spar next door and before spar opened some other shop got closed in its place so did someone open a chippy in competition which Chuis and then there are super markets opening every day in different places taking small corner shops business its all FairPlay as long as there is healthy completion. I myself believe that competition is always good for the community as customers have a choice and they get best value deals. Coming back to healthy competition I know many of good friends of Mel won't like me to state the false accusations made against us , blocking the parking entrance so our customers couldn't park their cars , them standing outside the shop stopping customers coming in our shop and list continues were all not niether professional nor even moral!! But we not even once stoop so low and we're still doing our business. I know many false accusations were made and complaints being filed by joint effort of chris rigs against management of premier in general to fuel the Chinese whispers Mel were spreading to give our business repute. I hereby would like to mention it to all people who posted them all over forum that no even one of them complaints were true the cases didn't even made it to hearings all the complaints were dropped and not even one fine was faced. Solely due the reason there was nothing wrong being done neither is to the date. The biggest rumour spread was underage kids being served if anyone here still says it was true can u please do us all a favour and prove it? Provide Any evidence for what u say or please stop spreading the hate against us.

I would also like to bring it to attention of our admin Mark Whittaker aswell please I know u can resist coming to our shop you must be a man with strong will power and u pass every weekend but never came in but did u even actually stopped by once to make your decision or to see if it's actually true what's being written on here about us to ask for evidence to prove anything? Mark u have got great respect in the community, you're the admin aswell and I can believe a lot of people must look up or get influenced by you aswell so would have been fair if u put Chinese whispers aside and actually be fair about the whole situation if not publish yourself at least give us a chance to publish something to help eradicate these false accusations and senseless stories please it's an humble request
Kind regards
Thanks

Not true. The wine shop closed because the parent company went out of business. Nothing to do with SPAR opening.

Premierstores - could the accusations be linked to this?  http://themarpleleaf.blogspot.co.uk/2011/06/marple-store-wars-new-twist.html (http://themarpleleaf.blogspot.co.uk/2011/06/marple-store-wars-new-twist.html)

OK so the underage sales bit is unproven - CCTV systems are notoriously unreliable. But employing illegal workers and selling illegally obtained alcohol does give a competitive advantage over your (presumably honest) neighbour.

Yet another blog (probably influenced by honest neighbour can see her comment right under it too) and drugs raid was carried out nothing was found illegal alcohol was tested by council and would like to mention here was returned by Chris rigs himself in his service vehicle which all brands are still being sold at shop with all prices kept same from first day with no price hikes after spar was closed! :)

Regarding illegal workers aswell it was honest mistakes by recruiter in checking relevant documents but all taxes were being paid and they were paid full wages aswell thus giving no upper hand to premier  proof was provided to council with which they were quite happy and premier did not face no legal actions :)

Mostly because we still don't get much support from most of the local community as most people here often show their grudge against us we have never in 5 years felt welcome here we do not feel part of the community

Don't get us wrong we have our brilliant customers who have been through thick n thin but we do have large section of community which is holding grudge for something we can't even be blamed for. I hereby appeal to all the viewers of this conversation to at least put the differences aside for once and at least come see yourself if we are in any wrong doing. Even a little effort will mean a lot to us if there is something u want to change or want us to add in our range or suggestions about our customer service are all welcome. We'll do our best to prove ourselves to you :)
Kind regards

My high school age children use Premier and I have never heard anything bad about it. My husband also uses it sometimes. The only bad experience we had was a while back, at the height of the feud between the two stores, from the Spar owner who was quite aggressive to anyone using Premier. It is a shame they have been made out to be so bad yet Greenhalgh's etc opened near to Gregs and didn't get the same venom. I also agree that they seem to be unfairly slated on here.

It's nice to hear Premier's side and I for one was not comfortable with Mel's reaction to the competition. I was also uncomfortable with the rumour mill that were cliched at best.

That said, setting up right next to the old Spar did appear aggressive and whilst I agree competition is healthy there would only apear to be only so much business at Rose Hill and in the event someone was going to get hurt in a business sense.

I do have to say in Premiers defence, every time i have used the store i have ALWAYS been asked to prove my age when buying alcohol. In my experience, the premier store has never once let me down. They have ordered specific items into the store when requested to by myself and always have lots of variety of items. I will be sad to see the shop go once it gets sold.

I agree with Duke Fame. In my opinion, Rose Hill can never support two similar convenience stores. It's always been my understanding that Mel didn't have other shops or businesses to prop up his store, whilst Raja/Premier could take a potential hit until the SPAR/Rose Hill Stores ceased trading. It's cold hard business. I think it was the proximity that upset some people; a new store didn't open across the road, or a few shops away. Premier opened next door to the SPAR with the knowledge they would simply outlast their neighbour.

Agree entirely. For that reason, I've never been in Premier even though it would be really handy for me as I pass every day. However if other owners took over I would probably use it. Prospective buyers take note.

The Greggs position is slightly different being national companies. Mel's spar was a franchise where with hard work, could support a livelihood. Sharing the trade with a new aggressive neighbour made it impossible and the whole family were hit. That's said, although I could understand the desperation, certain actions and utterances were not acceptable imho.

But Mel  wouldn't have opened if Premier had been there! He and his wife bought the franchise because there was no other shop in Rose Hill.

I don't suppose any of you have done your homework before making allegations or accusations have ya? Raja Bros is a chain of shops which are all owned by sole owners which can obviously crossed  check by any individual  it's more like a franchise where you use same trading name and there was no potential  support by other stores which again don't know whose been spreading rumours about and last but not least we did take help from different financial  institutions  to help run business  which I think  would have been available to mel aswell.

well as per I have posted above aswell  we are sole trader  to owning just one shop to double check you can also check all Raja Bros are owned and possessed  by different owners and some of them are even registered as private limited companies with sole owners (can be checked on government  websites ). And I don't know how you define aggressive  as humbly if I can ask because  the total era we were trading together  we never took one unjust or aggressive step whereas  everyone do know he did took law in hand and even took away our rights many times for instance  blocking our entrance . Evn being unlawful we never reported him so that he don't get in trouble or his family and being calm let the people be judge although we could have got him done for it . But seeing  this today I realise  how unjust people can be at times :)

I would like  to thank all the members who spoke up for us and actually  testify our innocence in regards  to allegations mostly made by people  who in there other posts claimed they have never  been in shop and we're arguing we were guilty.
I quoted this very post to ask all other members of group  and public that why nobody  asked the people spreading rumours about us to provide with evidence and  why have we always been slated for I will emphasise rumours  spread by our "honest neighbour" .

marveld and dukefame I would like to bring it to your attention aswell that there is sufficient business  in marple for a few shops to survive if the products are price fairly you can run your shop against a supermarket in a local community  as we do see if a lot of different councils shops are doing business alongside supermarket's  we were both same small scale shops so can't see difficulties.
When we did hear they were saying they're finding it difficult  to survive and customers should prefer spar we didn't propose to mel  to get their business  evaluated from firm of their own choice and we'll pay them the the business value but they put their hatred in front as choose to rather close it for us to receive  this criticism after they've gone .

I've only lived in Marple for less than two years (and at the opposite end at that) and nearby for three before that. I don't know any of the people involved. However, in general I would not be at all happy at a convenience store opening next door to another, regardless of who was there first. That really shouldn't happen. That said, there does seem to be a lot of heat in this situation for some reason which is not apparent to those of us not closely involved. I have never visited either the Spar, or the Premier stores, simply because of the location, although I go past on the way to work. Both shops seemed busy and the survivor still does. It always seemed bizarre to me to see the two shops next to each other and I'm surprised it was allowed. It would have seemed equally bizarre if the Premier store had been there first. I don't think which came first has any relevance.
