Title: Forum Upgrade 15 December 2014
Post by: admin on December 15, 2014, 07:45:30 AM
This morning the forum has had a major upgrade of the SMF software from version 1.1.19 to 2.0.9.

A new theme / template has also had to be built to accompany the upgrade and I've taken the opportunity to change the appearance a little.

The upgrade allows a number of new additions to be incorporated immediately, which include some Social Media buttons and the embedding of video from Youtube etc. The most important thing though is that we are now a little bit more "future proof" and will be able to add new features as they become available.

You may find that some of your personal settings have reset to the defaults. In my case for example my default language had become Albanian and I was no longer seeing the latest post first in a thread (which I find a much better way to view the threads). You can reset these in your personal profiles if necessary and of course I'm happy to help if you have problems with anything.

Your thoughts and feedback on the new look would be appreciated please.

I wondered what on earth had happened when I switched on!!  No doubt we will get used to it.

Are we able to tag a user on the new system, e.g., @admin which then notifies the user they are being mentioned?

There is a mod that claims to do that. Do you think it would be a good addition?

I use it a great deal on other forums. It's also widely used on Facebook and Twitter so is actually fairly standard.

OK @Howard, I've installed and enabled it. How does it work for you?

Here's how you access it:

@admin, that works perfectly! Got an email alert and everything. Think I'll turn the email alert off though, just the number on the "Mentions" part of the "Profile" dropdown is fine.

admin - don't suppose this new version of SMF forum you've deployed this week comes with a "quote wizard" to help folk like amazon quote previous postings correctly ?

Unfortunately not @sgk sorry. I'm not sure that it will ever be that clever  :-\  and Howard or I usually have to intervene.

The best advice on quotes is here:

http://www.marple-uk.com/smf/index.php?topic=5387.msg32425#msg32425

And to repeat the advice given there, always preview your post.

Actually, it's not just you,  Amazon. Mark and I fix quite a lot of posts from people who accidentally delete brackets from the "quote" tags. Always use the "preview" button!

That explains it. I thought my screen's resolution had gone a bit haywire. :)

A bit easier on the eye now the colours have softened.

Mark, I can't find the option to put latest posts at the top of the string when I'm looking at the boards. Could you point me in the direction of how to set this as it's driving me crackers trying to find the right place to get it back the way I want it!

It seems to be buried much deeper than before, I struggled to find it myself:

Profile > Modify Profile > Look and Layout > Checkbox = Show most recent posts at top.

There's also a new feature that lets you build an ignore list!

Ta Mark

I had tried profile and then summary, but I didn't see the Modify Profile link on the summary page. Now done and it's so much easier so thanks!

Hmm, a hide function, now that is very tempting!!!!!
