Title: Loan or donation of a Roach Pole
Post by: admin on June 10, 2014, 04:44:15 PM
A strange request I know, but are there any fishermen out there who can loan or donate an old roach pole to Friends of Marple Memorial Park?

If you can do this please get in touch via PM or mark@marple-uk.com

I had thought about throwing down the challenge to you but I think it's a bit high and wobbly and you're perhaps a bit too old and doddery now  :-\

With many thanks to Marveld, one of our regular visitors, I now have the perfect tool for the job with the donation of an ancient bamboo roach pole that hasn't seen the light of day for 25 years!

The big question now is should I put Amazon out of his misery and tell him what I need it for, or should I let him stew for a bit?

Let us all stew for a bit ....

I'm guessing it is to get the kite down from the tree near the playground (if it is still up there, haven't been there for a couple of weeks) or something similar???

Close, apart from there being no tree or kite involved  :D

My theory: it will be used to hang something from as a target for skaters to touch in a "how high can you jump" competition.

A great idea Howard but it's nowhere near as much fun as that sounds  ::)

There's going to be a reboot of "Fly Fishing, by J.R. Hartley" called "Roach Polling by M. Whittaker"

Shouldn't that be poling? If you mention Polling Duke Fame will hijack the thread to help us understand world politics.

Perhaps with some more guesses it could be called "50 Things you can do with an old Roach Pole!"

PS - has anyone figured Amazon's puzzle so I can claim a fiver?

Oooooooh Errrrrrrrr Mrs!!!!!!
I googled L??G L??S Manchester and it came up with 'Long Legs' Manchester.
I can see why Amazon wouldn't be allowed to go there (or would want to for that matter!!)
Hope I have won you a tenner for the Skate Park Mark.

Flash of inspiration!
Perhaps it's the word 'pole' that Amazon is referring to (as in 'dancing').

I think you'll get lots of donations so that Amazon doesn't have to pole dance.

Actually, don't answer that.... you're probably right  >:(

I'm sure it will be long enough - I'll stand on Phil's shoulders if necessary - job is waiting for delivery of some new components so haven't done it yet. I'm hoping for delivery by next week if not before.

I won't answer that then but will remind you about the "bit high and wobbly" aspect too.

Nobody's guessed yet so I will mention that there's more than one pole involved in this tale!

I'm please to put you out of your misery at last (what, you'd forgotten! ).

The roach pole was needed to get a hook onto the counter-weight sling on the flagpole nearest the council offices in Memorial Park. This is because the sling was jammed and couldn't be lowered. In addition, the internal halyard cover was broken so we've had to fit a new one. This is why it's taken so long, as the service from the first supplier that we went to for replacement parts was appalling and the order had to be cancelled and parts obtained from elsewhere.

Anyway, repairs were all done this morning and the flag commemorating 10 Years in the Park was moved to this flagpole so that we could raise a "Lest We Forget" flag on the one near the War Memorial just in time for 100 Years since the start of WWI tomorrow. As you can see we're ready!
